A History of Russian ThoughtFrom Cambridge University Press

The history of ideas has played a central role in Russia's political and social history. Understanding its intellectual tradition and the way the intelligentsia have shaped the nation is crucial to understanding the Russia of today. This new history examines important intellectual and cultural currents (the Enlightenment, nationalism, nihilism, and religious revival) and key themes (conceptions of the West and East, the common people, and attitudes to capitalism and natural science) in Russian intellectual history. Concentrating on the Golden Age of Russian thought in the mid nineteenth century, the contributors also look back to its eighteenth-century origins in the flowering of culture following the reign of Peter the Great, and forward to the continuing vitality of Russia's classical intellectual tradition in the Soviet and post-Soviet eras. With brief biographical details of over fifty key thinkers and an extensive bibliography, this book provides a fresh, comprehensive overview of Russian intellectual history.

Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Atlantic World: Angola and Brazil during the Era of the Slave Trade (African Studies), by Roquinaldo Ferrei

This book argues that Angola and Brazil were connected, not separated, by the Atlantic Ocean. Roquinaldo Ferreira focuses on the cultural, religious, and social impacts of the slave trade on Angola. Reconstructing biographies of Africans and merchants, he demonstrates how cross-cultural trade, identity formation, religious ties, and resistance to slaving were central to the formation of the Atlantic world. By adding to our knowledge of the slaving process, the book powerfully illustrates how Atlantic slaving transformed key African institutions, such as local regimes of forced labor that predated and coexisted with Atlantic slaving, and made them fundamental features of the Atlantic world's social fabric.

Review
"The book admirably covers a vast amount of hepatology...The collection of color plates in the center of the book is a highlight...Since the publication of the first edition of Liver Disease in Children, it has been one of the core textbooks of pediatric hepatology. The third edition is up-to-date and has incorporated large amounts of new information. Once again, it is the essential pediatric hepatology textbook." New England Journal of Medicine

"The chapters on cystic fibrosis, Alagille syndrome, viral hepatitis, medical and nutritional management of the infant with cholestasis and drug induced liver disease are particularly well written and easy to read...an excellent selection of color plates on a diverse number of topics...generally well illustrated throughout."
Practical Gastroenterology

"Well written and organized...The text is supplemented with well-conceived tables, figures, graphs, and, new to this edition, color plates that greatly facilitate understanding of the information presented. As with its previous iterations, the third edition of Liver Disease in Children builds on a strong scientific foundation and effectively bridges pathophysiologic principles with clinical practice, providing authoritative updated reviews on all topics relevant to the discipline. The textbook is the premier reference in the field and should be truly enjoyed by primary care practitioners, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and anyone genuinely interested in the care of children with liver disease."
Journal of the American Medical Association

Board Study
By Patioman
I purchased this book to help prepare for the Pedi GI Boards. It served as an excellent secondary resource for reviewing details of pediatric liver diseases. The color plates were particularly useful to review pathology.

The book was listed as "new" but arrived from Amazon.com with a dent in the side of the book which damaged many of the pages. I did not have time to return, so used as is. I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the damage.

great liver text
By bokonoko
Great liver text. This was recommended to me by the director of transplant hepatology at my institution. Very readable. Extensive discussions of epidemiology/etiology and heavily referenced throughout, perhaps too much so at points, describing theories that came and went and why, which aren't very clinically relevant (i.e. chapter on neonatal jaundice has 598 references, viral hepatitis has 606 references!!). Still, from a clinical standpoint there is great discussion of progression of lab values with disease progression or expected changes with treatment, varied presentations with different ages, therapeutic options, and so on. Nice color plates and images throughout. Probably a must-own for a peds GI fellow.

Will only keep getting better
By Kyle
If you take care of children with liver disease, this is the must have. Good pictures, text, figures. Is expanding as the field grows and will keep getting better with improved chapters on liver transplantation, etc. (Get the next version if you're considering buying now; it'll be worth the wait).

Diffusion: Mass Transfer in Fluid Systems (Cambridge Series in Chemical Engineering), by E. L. Cussler

This overview of diffusion and separation processes brings unsurpassed, engaging clarity to this complex topic. Diffusion is a key part of the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum and at the core of understanding chemical purification and reaction engineering. This spontaneous mixing process is also central to our daily lives, with importance in phenomena as diverse as the dispersal of pollutants to digestion in the small intestine. For students, Diffusion goes from the basics of mass transfer and diffusion itself, with strong support through worked examples and a range of student questions. It also takes the reader right through to the cutting edge of our understanding, and the new examples in this third edition will appeal to professional scientists and engineers. Retaining the trademark enthusiastic style, the broad coverage now extends to biology and medicine.

3rd Edition expands and clarifies several topics
By Hunter S. Thompson
I feel that this is an excellent book for any student taking their first mass transport and separations course. This is the only science/engineering text book I have ever owned that I actually enjoyed reading. Professor Cussler is a very enthusiastic and brilliant expert on the subject (I am a student in his department, and was lucky enough to have him guest lecture for us) and it really shows in his writing style in this book.

This book manages to present the subject matter clearly starting from the basics and then logically and clearly building up to much more complex material, all while Professor Cussler walks you through the reasons why he is taking the steps he is, and how these steps are justified. This book is very frank and enthusiastic when presenting material (Professor Cussler makes sure to let you know if he is skipping steps, or what steps are common sources of confusion and to pay attention to these steps).

The third edition also separates the sections on differential and staged distillation into two stand-alone chapters, and also incorporates more examples to relate the topics of this book to medicine and biology, helping to broaden the appeal of this book.

That being said, there are still some improvements this book could make for the next revision (not likely to come for a while since the 3rd edition was just released this year). There are some typos/mislabels scattered about the text, but nothing so major as to make the understanding the material impossible. All the typos are pretty minor and would be easily sorted out through a quick comparison to class notes or reading the text as Professor Cussler explains what he is doing. Furthermore, there are also several problems that have answers listed that aren't "exactly" right, meaning they appear to have been rounded off too much.

GOOD BOOKS FOR STUDENTS !
By A Customer
This is an excellent book to learn the basics of Separation Processes. Cussler managed to explain Chemical Engineering concepts in a very easy way to understand by students. I was lucky to get him as my lecturer several years ago to learn Separation processes.

Very interesting and good book
By Tatsuro Shirai
I think this book is really a good book for students, and for people who want to refresh their understandings about diffusion.
I am now interested in diffusion in polymer/solvents solution during coated film is being dried. The drying mechanism is complicated as this is a moving boundary problem, accompanying multi-component diffusion in the coated layer and solvents evaporation from the surface.
This book contains little topics relating to the above, but still I felt the necessity of returning to fundamentals, and read this book.
The writing style of this book is very frank, viz. the author expresses his value judgments and opinions based on his experiences. If I were young, I would like to take his lessons using this book.
I couldn't understand why ratings hear are so much spreading.

Parliament and Literature in Late Medieval England (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature), by Matthew Giancarlo

Parliament and Literature in Late Medieval England investigates the relationship between the development of parliament and the practice of English poetry in the later fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. During this period, the bureaucratic political culture of parliamentarians, clerks, and scribes overlapped with the artistic practice of major poets like Chaucer, Gower, and Langland, all of whom had strong ties to parliament. Matthew Giancarlo investigates these poets together in the specific context of parliamentary events and controversies, as well as in the broader environment of changing constitutional ideas. Two chapters provide fresh analyses of the parliamentary ideologies that developed from the thirteenth century onward, and four chapters investigate the parliamentary aspects of each poet, as well as the later Lancastrian imitators of Langland. This study demonstrates the importance of the changing parliamentary environs of late medieval England and their centrality to the early growth of English narrative and lyric forms.

Review
"Parliament and Literature in Late Medieval England is a coherent study of deeply rooted connections between parliament and poetry in the later Middle Ages... This is a book that the field needs, and indeed it chimes with much current work... [it] makes a compelling argument about the relationship between two changing aspects of society, reminding us of the centrality of parliament in the textual culture of the era, and making clear the extent of the interpenetration between political and poetic forms. An exploration of parliament in the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries produces a portrait of a changing political world, tracing major social, bureaucratic, textual, legal, and political upheavals through this combative and controversial institution. Giancarlo is doing something much more sophisticated than merely claiming that literature reflects political and institutional changes; he goes some way towards demonstrating a mutual dependence and influence in terms both of form and of concerns."
-Marion Turner, Jesus College, Oxford, Review of English Studies

"Given the obvious relevance of an evolving parliamentary system to a literature which often comments on its collective concerns, it is surprising that no one has attempted such a detailed study of the relationship between them and reassuring that Giancarlo's is so well executed. His understanding of what constitutes influence in these terms is complex and carefully articulated... All in all, this is an engaging and thought-provoking study which should be of interest to both literary critics and historians."
-Elizabeth Evershed, Durham University, Medium 'vum

"This is a rich book and a learned one. Giancarlo writes clearly and simply, offering real historical information about the history of parliament, parliamentary Commons, and parliamentary procedure... His critical and cultural arguments emerge from his familiarity with English texts in England's three languages, which he cannily employs in an argument for a common voice. He also offers some trenchant remarks about petitionary narrative, about gender -- both historically and imaginatively represented -- and about the development of literary forms in relation to historic events. In moving easily from the Thirteenth to the early Sixteenth Century, he makes an implicit argument for grounding our understanding of the Early Modern period in an understanding of medieval forms and institutions... I can see much good work emerging from a study as filled with attentive readings, sound scholarship, and cultural awareness as this one."
-Lynn Staley, Colgate University, Studies in the Age of Chaucer

"Poetry vis-a-vis politics makes a good, substantial subject, especially between the reigns of Henry III and Henry V. This volume has the thoroughness and weight we might expect of the theme... Matthew Giancarlo has written a serious, professional work. It will be an essential guide to the no man's land between the legislative assemblies and poetry of late medieval England. It offers varied insights on how parliament was viewed and what ideologies its members possessed... [in] an age when courtiers, MPs, and civil servants read political poetry, and sometimes even wrote it."
-Andrew Breeze, University of Navarre, Modern Language Review

"[T]his book builds its case through a detailed and thorough investigation of the entanglements of parliamentary controversies and literary endeavors. Giancarlo convincingly demonstrates that parliament provided an inspiration for late medieval English writers engaged in the ambitious task of writing a uniquely public poetry. This book will be of interest to historians and literary scholars alike and makes an important contribution to recent explorations of voice and authorship, the development of a public sphere, and the growth of documentary culture in fourteenth-century London."
-Claire Sponsler, University of Iowa, Journal of British Studies

"In sum, this study offers a new and persuasive way of thinking about parliament's centrality to the development of Ricardian and early Lancastrian poetry and its narrative forms... [T]he strength of this book lies in its ability to demonstrate the fresh perspectives that become available to historians and literary scholars when the extraordinary, symbiotic relationship between two of late medieval England's greatest institutions is scrutinised. Giancarlo's study makes an admirable contribution to the field of medieval studies and it will no doubt become a standard work of reference for those working on political thought, the history of ideas and English literature of the later Middle Ages."
Sarah Peverley, University of Liverpool, The Medieval Review

"Matthew Giancarlo has written a splendid and important book on parliament and literature in late medieval England. While the book will prove to be mandatory reading for scholars of late medieval English literature, the title might understate the significance of this work for historians of the period. Giancarlo's approach to his subject is truly interdisciplinary, and he is as well-versed in the history of the period as he is in the poetry. Moreover, this book clearly demonstrates that such an interdisciplinary approach is the best way to understand the development of medieval parliament, and Giancarlo has provided a model that will rekindle interest in the history of the institution... It is precisely the enticing nature of Giancarlo's analysis here and elsewhere that makes this book at once a readable and admirably complex treatment of the intertwined development of parliament and English literature."
Clementine Oliver, California State University-Northridge, Medievalia et Humanistica

""Giancarlo's study succesfully interfaces with a range of recently prominent critical concerns: literature and documents/documentary culture, the status of English vernacularity, (and Ricardian origins), complaint and the rhetoric of the bill or petition, literature and legalism."
Ralph Hanna,University of Oxford

"Giancarlo's study successfully interfaces with a range of recently prominent critical concerns ... The strength of Giancarlo's arguments resides in the discovery and analysis of a public space in which all these topics achieve a common prominence ... There is much to learn from and to admire in Giancarlo's most general argumentative moves. The volume makes a strong, if not always robustly and analytically argued, case for reading across the divide between 'the [conventionally] literary' and 'the [conventionally] historical.' ... Giancarlo's argument proceeds through a series of elegant and well chosen juxtapositions ... Giancarlo has a strong framework for his analysis, and he handles it adeptly throughout the book ... In this documentary study, the volume is unfailingly interesting ... His chosen exemplary bills are richly suggestive and, generally, provocatively analyzed ... Parliament and Literature does a richly provocative job, especially with materials conventionally the province of historians."
The Journal of Ecclesiastical History

Gold Standard in SMT
By Jay Yamada
Philipp Koehn is a superb lecturer and teacher in the area of statistical machine translation (SMT). I have being living off his lecture notes from the ACL, LSA summer session and Edinburgh for years and eagerly waiting for this book to tie everything together.

Koehn has the ability to take complex statistical concepts and make them comprehensible. And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the state-of-the-art in SMT. His bibliography alone is worth the price of this book.

This book will be the gold standard in SMT for years to come. I would highly recommend to students and professionals in the field.

Must-Have Item for MT System Developer
By Sunghyun Kim
I currently work at NLP software company in South Korea as an NLU software developer.
When I bought this book, I was finishing my own MT decoder and starting to
build a rudimentary IBM word alignment model trainer.

This book greatly contributed to the project in that it deeply corrected my wrong understanding of
many concepts such as dynamic programming, optimization, beam search, and etc.

Best part : It includes easy-to-understand pseudo-code for IBM 1~5 word alignment process.

It was also helpful in improving the performance of existing decoder.

As one of the leading figures in well-known Moses project and Euro Matrix,
author's explanation is firmly grounded upon practical experience and
includes a lot of elements required for building a prototype MT system.

I believe reading this book with the background knowledge
that you can learn in such books as Artificial Intelligence
: A Modern Approach or Mitchell's Machine Learning,
may maximize your learning rate, since the subject stuffs in
these books are highly inter-related with each others,
for example, unsupervised learning algorithm(especially EM),
optimization and search.

This book is top-ranked in NLP category of my personal book shelf.
I guess you won't regret if you purchase one.

Must-have for all scientists working on SMT
By Tommi Pirinen
It is more or less obligatory reading for anyone working on the topic. Goes through most important methods and approaches to implementing the system and the algorithms are described well enough that one can re-implement them easily. There are some errors that can be problematic if you forget to check the errata. Sometimes the notations of formulas are a bit hard to follow. All in all rather well written school-book for contemporary statistical machine translation.

Cancer Pain: Assessment and ManagementFrom Cambridge University Press

Drs. Eduardo D. Bruera and Russell K. Portenoy have completely revised and updated the widely respected Cancer Pain: Assessment and Management for the second edition of this unanimously praised book. This is a comprehensive, clinically oriented review of all aspects of the complex and multidimensional problem of cancer pain. The unique characteristics of cancer pain, including pathophysiology, clinical assessment, diagnosis, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological management are all discussed here in detail. Internationally recognized leaders in cancer pain research have contributed to many new chapters, including neuraxial analgesia, hospice and institution-based palliative care programs, bone pain, and cancer pain and palliative care in the developing world. Cancer Pain continues to be a scholarly but accessible text that is an essential resource for physicians, nurses, and medical students who treat suffering from cancer pain. Per the New England Journal of Medicine, "This book should be in the library of every physician who comes into contact with patients with pain. It is truly superb."

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Three percent of the American population is living with cancer. Many of these patients have pain that is due to the disease or to the treatment they are receiving for it. Annually, more than 500,000 persons have terminal cancer, and 60 to 80 percent of them have severe pain. Because these patients receive care from physicians in many different fields, the responsibility to improve pain control should fall on all the physicians who are providing care. Studies conducted more than a decade ago found that both the physicians specializing in the treatment of cancer and the patients who have the disease acknowledged that pain due to cancer was undertreated. These data prompted the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research to publish a comprehensive review of the literature and, in 1994, guidelines for the management of pain due to cancer. Despite the intention of these guidelines, pain in patients with cancer is still poorly managed, even in comprehensive cancer centers, as was brought to light by a recent report from the Institute of Medicine (published in 2001). This book provides physicians with the information necessary to turn around the Institute of Medicine's bad report card on treating pain due to cancer. Both of the editors have spent more than two decades studying the treatment of pain in cancer, and both are internationally recognized leaders in the field. The list of editors and contributing authors reads like a who's who in the field of cancer-pain management. In spite of the title, most of the information in this book is applicable to patients who have pain from many other causes, not just from cancer. This well-organized book begins with a section on the biology and prevalence of pain in cancer and proceeds to sections on assessment and obstacles to pain management and on pharmacologic principles of opioid, nonopioid, and adjuvant medications. Potential obstacles to pain management are discussed in chapters on the management of side effects of opioid therapy and on the care of geriatric and pediatric patients and patients who have substance-abuse disorders. The basis for the laws regulating opioid treatment is summarized by Dahl, who spearheaded the inclusion of standards for pain assessment and management in the process of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Even the psychosocial impact of pain on patients and their families is adequately covered in the book. A chapter is devoted to the role of the family caregiver in the management of pain, and additional information for caregivers that can be found on the Web is referenced, as well as other reading material. It would have been helpful to include information for physicians and other health care providers that outlined specific interventions for pain. The coexistence with cancer of depression and its contribution to patients' perception of "pain," along with methods of treatment, are thoroughly reviewed. The management of pain requires a multidisciplinary team. Therefore, the roles of professionals in various disciplines -- psychology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, anesthesia, and neurosurgery -- are also covered. The chapters focused on cancer address the roles of radiation, chemotherapy, and neurosurgical interventions for pain. A unique and practical chapter titled "Cancer Pain Syndromes" describes syndromes of acute and chronic pain that are caused directly or indirectly by disease or by the medical interventions used to treat it. Among the topics included are headache from lumbar puncture, 5-fluorouracil-induced angina, pain associated with growth factors, radiation enteritis, hormone flare reactions, hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, otalgia, and plexopathy. Recommendations for treatment are made for some but not all of these disease-related effects. Given the comprehensiveness of this book, it is surprising that the interventions are not adequately covered. It would have been helpful to add recommendations for treating all the complications described or to have included at least a reference to another chapter in the book for such recommendations. The goal Bruera and Portenoy had in creating this book was that it would lead to "improved understanding in treating this devastating disease," and they say they hope that it will "contribute to improvement in care." This comprehensive yet practical book contains all the information needed to provide appropriate interventions to relieve pain in patients who have cancer, while also dispelling the myths and concerns that have contributed to the reluctance of physicians to provide such care. This book should be in the library of every physician who comes into contact with patients with pain. It is truly superb. Joanne E. Mortimer, M.D.

Review
"The book is intended for a wide range of clinicians with varying degrees of expertise in the care of those with cancer-related pain. It meets the needs of those beginning to learn about cancer pain as well as those with significant experience. Both editors are internationally recognized for their expertise in this area, and the authors, who reflect the diverse array of clinicians and others who are involved in this area, are all experts in the field....The field of cancer pain management is constantly evolving. This updated edition reflects the many new findings and clinical implications. Although there are numerous cancer pain handbooks or quick reference guides, there is nothing as comprehensive and as scientifically rigorous as this book."

Review
"There are a growing number of physicists, engineers, mathematicians and chemists who are interested in joining the post-genomics party and addressing cutting-edge problems in molecular and cell biology. The barrier to entry can be high and prohibitive. This marvelous new book opens the door for the quantitatively inclined. Beard and Qian, in an accessible and clear style, present fundamental methods that can be used to model and analyze an array of biomolecular systems and processes, ranging from enzyme kinetics to gene regulatory networks to cellular transport. This book will appeal to autodidacts as well as professors looking for course texts."
J. J. Collins, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and MacArthur Fellow, Boston University

"This is one of the most useful and readable accounts of biochemical thermodynamics that I have seen for a long time, if indeed ever. It is very definitely a book that I shall want to have on my shelves and to refer others to, because it contains a considerable amount of information not easy to find elsewhere."
Athel Cornish-Bowden, Directeur de Recherche, CNRS, Marseilles

"Dan Beard's and Hong Qian's Chemical Biophysics is a masterful portrayal of a critically important new area of science. The success of genomics now makes it imperative to understand the relationships between proteomics, biochemical systems behavior and the physiology of the intact animal or human. This book provides the path. Its clarity of description, making the complexities seem simple by adhering to fundamental principles, avoiding cluttering detail while painting the broad picture to great depth, makes it a pleasure to read and a treasure to study. It's a must for scientists and scholars working to understand integrative biology."
James B. Bassingthwaighte, Professor of Bioengineering, Biomathematics and Radiology at the University of Washington, Seattle

"This wonderful book will be indispensable to specialists in the fields of systems biology, biochemical kinetics, cell signaling, genetic circuits and quantitative aspects of biology, and also to undergraduate and graduate students. It presents a systematic approach to analyzing biochemical systems. The complex subjects are described in a clear style, with carefully crafted definitions and derivations. This unique book is an important step in the development and dissemination of systems biology approaches."
Aleksander S. Popel, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

"Chemical Biophysics: Quantitative Analysis of Cellular Systems by Daniel Beard and Hong Qian fills a significant niche. The text is a concise yet clear exposition of the fundamentals of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics, aimed specifically at practitioners of the new science of systems biology. It is marvelously illustrated with biochemical examples that will aid those who aim to analyze and model the workings of biological cells."
David Eisenberg, Director UCLA-DOE Institute for Genomics & Proteomics, University of California, Los Angeles, Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

"As computational biology moves into a more integrative and multi-scale phase, to provide the quantitative framework for linking the mass of experimental data generated by molecular techniques at the subcellular level to tissue and organ scale physiology, it is vitally important that models are based on quantitative approaches that incorporate, wherever possible, thermodynamically constrained biophysical mechanisms. This new book on the Chemical Biophysics of Cellular Processes by Dan Beard and Hong Qian does a wonderful job of formulating models for metabolic pathways, gene regulatory networks and protein interaction networks on the well-established principles of physical chemistry. Topics include enzyme catalyzed reactions, reaction-diffusion modeling, membrane transport, the chemical master equation and much more. This book will be of lasting value to computational biologists and bioengineers."
Professor Peter J Hunter, Auckland Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland

"Metabolic modelings often contain simplified assumptions to achieve convergence of their equations and these sometimes violate principles of solution physical chemistry. Readers of this remarkable monograph will no longer find those approaches satisfactory because Beard and Qian elucidate principles of kinetics and thermodynamics of electrolyte solutions relevant to metabolic modeling and computational biology. They show how these principles are essential for molecular modeling of cellular processes most of which involve ionized molecules and macromolecules in the cytoplasm. Their exposition is rigorous. The chapters have an enormous scope and depth that present clear derivations, explanations and examples. Beard and Qian set the bar very high for future metabolic modeling yet show how the details involved can be managed well and correctly. Analyses at this level of detail are necessary before more complex concepts of molecular crowding and intracellular compartmentalization can be considered. I expect this monograph will become a landmark in computational and systems biology and will be read thoroughly by all scholars in these fields."
Martin J. Kushmerick, Professor of Radiology, Bioengineering, Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington, Seattle

"This work will help shift a reader's focus from a reductionist perspective to the broader approach of systems biology and the dynamic behavior that allows components of cells and organisms to come together to function properly."
J.A. Kelly, Choice

A book that fills an important gap
By John Duncan
Almost everybody finds classical thermodynamics difficult, and this has always been so: even the great physicists of the 19th century who created the subject had to struggle to understand it. It is not so much that the mathematics is so difficult: with a proper grounding in calculus, especially partial differentiation, one can understand the equations and their derivation easily enough in mathematical terms. On the other hand the qualitative ideas of statistical thermodynamics are not so difficult either. It is the effort relating these to the mathematics, and to classical thermodynamics (heat engines, Carnot cycles, etc.) that causes the eyes to glaze over.

Unfortunately, however, a training in thermodynamics is absolutely essential to chemistry and to the chemical underpinning of the biophysical analysis of cellular systems. Metabolism, for example, is not just a matter of listing all the chemical reactions; it is also a matter of knowing which ones will readily proceed and in what conditions. Determining all this involved a great deal of measurements in the 20th century on the equilibrium constants and other thermodynamic parameters of biochemical reactions. More than that, it involved understanding how the thermodynamic parameters of whole sequences of reactions depend on those of the individual processes, and how these depend on those of the component reactants.

Until now, however, textbooks that explain the principles of thermodynamics in the biochemical context have been few, a fewer still have been written in a way that students can be expected to understand. The new book of Daniel Beard and Hong Qian fills an important gap, therefore, and should be widely adopted in all departments where physical biochemistry is taught.

The first part of the book covers the basic concepts of thermodynamics, as far as possible using biologically relevant examples. Almost immediately the authors introduce the ideas that "in biology and chemistry we are usually not interested in the study of isolated systems", and that "biochemical processes occur in an aqueous environment". This brings us quite quickly to the idea that the Gibbs energy (not the entropy, and not the Helmholtz energy) is the quantity to consider in determining the thermodynamic driving force in a typical biochemical reaction. Likewise the stress is entirely on reactions in solutions, without the emphasis on gases (whether perfect or not) that tended to characterize textbooks in the past and to mystify raeders who wondered what perfect gases had to do with the sort of processes of primary concern in biology. This part of the book also deals with basic ideas of kinetics and transport.

In the second part the authors move on to the analysis and modelling of biochemical systems, the second part of which barely existed as a research topic twenty years ago but has in recent years become an essential component of systems biology. The relationship between enzyme mechanisms and reaction kinetics is explained briefly (as this is not a kinetics book) but thoroughly, and is followed by a chapter on control mechanisms and signalling, focussing on the properties such as zero-order ultrasensitivity and biochemical oscillations that are not possible for single enzymes but can emerge from interactions between several enzymes.

The last part of the book deals with several of what the authors call special topics, mainly ones that have been mentioned already but require a more profound and detailed treatment. A chapter, for example, is devoted to constraint-based analysis of biochemical systems -- the sort of modelling one can do when there is not enough information to set up an adequate kinetic model.

In summary (as I am quoted on the back cover as saying in my report to the publishers), this is one of the most useful and readable accounts of biochemical thermodynamics that I have seen for a long time, if indeed ever.
