About the Author
David Jordan is a Senior Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. His previous publications include Battle of the Bulge (2003) and The Fall of Hitler's Reich: Germany's Defeat in Europe, 1943-45 (2004).

James D. Kiras is Associate Professor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, Air University, United States Air Force. He is the author of Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism (2006) and was awarded The Air Education Training Command civilian 'Educator of the Year'award for 2006-7.

David J. Lonsdale is a Lecturer in Strategic Studies at the University of Hull. His publications include The Nature of War in the Information Age: Clausewitzian Future (2004) and Alexander the Great: Lessons in Strategy (2007).

Ian Speller is a Lecturer in the Department of History at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He also lectures in defence studies at the Irish Defence Forces Military College and in maritime strategy at the UK Defence Academy and at the National Maritime College of Ireland. He is the author of The Role of Amphibious Warfare in British Defence Policy, 1945-56 (2001) and the editor of The Royal Navy and Maritime Power in the Twentieth Century (2005).

Christopher Tuck is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. He co-authored, with Ian Speller, Amphibious Warfare: The Theory and Practice of Amphibious Warfare in the Twentieth Century (2001).

C. Dale Walton is a Lecturer in International Relations and Strategic Studies at the University of Reading. Among his publications are The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (2002) and Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the Twenty-First Century (2007).

Great book - where are the worked examples??

I picked up this slightly pricey book because I wanted to teach myself OR as applied to finance. I deliberately selected this text because (a) Its partly based on the well-regarded Carnegie Mellon quant finance courses; and (b) there are few prerequisites that i can see to use this book.

While I find the book to be well-written and an excellent introduction to OR for even entry level students, what makes me disappointed is the fact that almost none of the examples in the book have worked solutions. Neither does there appear to be a separate solution manual (which I would be prepared to purchase) nor have the authors appeared to supply one on their websites.

Its a basic principle for learning mathematics that you need worked examples! You might argue that the solutions can be worked through with an instructor, but what about those of us using it on a standalone basis?

Modern view, balanced coverage of optimization methods for quantitative finance

This is a very up-to-date book featuring complete, balanced coverage of optimization methods used in quantitative finance. It should be a great resource for practitioners in financial engineering or portfolio management who need to know what methods to apply to different problems, and how to evaluate competing vendor claims, without going too deeply into the algorithmic details of each optimization method.

The book has 20 chapters that alternate between an overview of a class of optimization methods, then a set of examples applying those methods to problems in quantitative finance:

* Linear programming, with applications to asset/liability cash flow matching and arbitrage detection

* Nonlinear programming, with applications to volatility estimation

* Quadratic programming, with good coverage of mean-variance portfolio optimization

* Conic optimization, with several applications: index tracking, approximating covariance matrices, recovering risk-neutral probabilities from option prices

* Integer programming, with applications to index fund construction and combinatorial auctions

* Dynamic programming, with applications to pricing American options

* Stochastic programming, with applications that minimize Conditional Value at Risk, and manage assets and liabilities over multiple periods

* Robust optimization, with models to deal with estimation risk in portfolio optimization

It's difficult to find another book with this breadth of coverage of optimization methods, especially with a focus on quantitative finance. It's also difficult to find another book that treats modern methods of conic optimization and robust optimization, which have growing importance in finance.

Granted, the treatment of the different applications is not meant to be comprehensive -- it's really just enough to give the reader an idea of how each problem can be approached, with appropriate references to the academic literature to learn more. There are some references to available software for the different methods, but this is a brief and partial snapshot; commercial software for the newer methods is getting better all the time.

Appendices provide brief, helpful introductions to four key technical topics in optimization: Convexity, cones, probability, and the revised Simplex method. An understanding of convexity and cones is essential to an appreciation of modern methods of conic and robust optimization, and certainly anyone working in this field needs an understanding of probability and the Simplex method for linear programming.

I believe this book fills a need that has existed for some time: For the quantitative finance practitioner with way too much technical literature to deal with, it provides a comprehensive, modern introduction to optimization methods that makes efficient use of the reader's time. It's well worth the price for someone working in this field.

Useful book for self-study

As a retired practioner of quantitative finance who also programs the applications himself in Visual Basic, C++ and Java, it is often difficult to find useful books that are not only of importance for theorists but also for practioners. Cornejols'and Tütüncü's book fills this gap. I agree with a comment above that it would earn one or two stars more if it would contain worked-out examples, although with some more efforts it should be possible to work them out yourself, given the clear explanations in the book.

About the Author
Alex Segura-Ubiergo is Resident Representative in Senegal and the Gambia for the International Monetary Fund, where he has served as an economist since 2001. Dr. Segura-Ubiergo is the recipient of the Mancur Olson Award for the best dissertation in political economy in 2001 2002. His articles have appeared in World Politics and Hacienda P blica as well as in the Occasional Papers and Working Papers series of the IMF. He received undergraduate and Master's degrees in both Economics and Political Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a doctorate from Columbia University, where he held a Fulbright Scholarship.

About the Author
Dr Linda Mayes is the Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology in the Yale Child Study Center, a department in the Yale School of Medicine. As a clinical investigator she works at the interface of three fields - pediatrics, developmental psychology and child psychiatry. Formally trained as a pediatrician and neonatologist, her work integrates perspectives from child development, behavioral neuroscience, psychophysiology, neurobiology, developmental psychopathology and neurobehavioral teratology. She is the author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers and more than 100 chapters and reviews. Dr Mayes is also the author of a book for parents, The Yale Child Study Center Guide to Understanding your Child. She is also special advisor to the dean in the Yale University School of Medicine.

Michael Lewis is University Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry and Director of the Institute for the Study of Child Development at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He also is Professor of Psychology, Education, Cognitive Science and Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University. Dr Lewis has published more than 300 articles in scientific journals and has written or edited more than 35 books, including Social Cognition and the Acquisition of Self (1979), Children's Emotions and Moods: Developmental Theory and Measurement (1983), Shame: The Exposed Self (1992) and Altering Fate: Why the Past Does Not Predict the Future (1997). He edited the Handbook of Developmental Psychopathology, 2nd edition (2001) and the Handbook of Emotions, 3rd edition (2009). He recently won the Urie Bronfenbrenner Award from the American Psychological Association for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society.

About the Author
Lloyd Gerson is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of numerous books including Ancient Epistemology (Cambridge, 2009), Aristotle and Other Platonists (2005) and Knowing Persons: A Study in Plato (2004), as well as the editor for The Cambridge Companion to Plotinus (1996).

An excellent and much needed summary of late antique philosophy

I have not finished it, but I would like to say this. There has been a lot of work since A.H. Armstrong's history. This current effort is a much needed summary of work since Armstrong, especially since most of the scholarship is not in English. The bibliography is massive and much to its credit, late antique philosophy is treated with greater seriousness by the current generation of scholars than in Armstrong's day, which tended to be dismissive. Anyone interested in late antique philosophy will profit greatly. Let me add that this effort does not completely displace Armstrong's history, but rather complements and expands on his work..
