About the Author
Philippe Jacquet is a Research Director at INRIA, a major public research lab in computer science in France. He has been a major contributor to the Internet OLSR protocol for mobile networks. His research interests involve information theory, probability theory, quantum telecommunication, protocol design, performance evaluation and optimization, and the analysis of algorithms. Since 2012 he has been with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs as head of the department of Mathematics of Dynamic Networks and Information. Jacquet is a member of the prestigious French Corps des Mines, known for excellence in French industry, with the rank of 'Ingenieur General'. He is also a member of ACM and IEEE.

Wojciech Szpankowski is Saul Rosen Professor of Computer Science and (by courtesy) Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, where he teaches and conducts research in analysis of algorithms, information theory, bioinformatics, analytic combinatorics, random structures, and stability problems of distributed systems. In 2008 he launched the interdisciplinary Institute for Science of Information, and in 2010 he became the Director of the newly established NSF Science and Technology Center for Science of Information. Szpankowski is a Fellow of IEEE and an Erskine Fellow. He received the Humboldt Research Award in 2010.

About the Author
David Morin is Lecturer on Physics at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from Harvard in 1996. When not writing physics limericks or thinking of new problems whose answers involve e or the golden ratio, he can be found running along the Charles River or hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Diabolical problems

The title is somewhat of a misnomer: this book would not serve as an appropriate introduction to classical mechanics. It is not at the same level as Halliday, Resnick, Walker or Serway; it's more advanced and seems to assume one has already completed a mechanics course taught from one of those books.

The heart of this book is the problems and exercises at the end of each chapter. They are extremely clever. The author rates them by difficulty and provides full solutions with insightful commentary for about half of them. The hardest one are RIDICULOUSLY hard.

If you're addicted to problem-solving or are a physics professor in search of new tortures, this is an excellent resource. If you are actually looking to learn about topics like Lagrangians or Special Relativity, this might not be the best stand alone text. However, its footnotes and commentary accompanying the problems cast a lot of light on aspects of these topics you may not have considered.

The following I would like to not go unsaid about this book:

1) The prose is casual and clever.
2) Surprisingly: the disarming prose does not compromise the organization of the principles and material, as I feel Griffiths' texts unfortunately do.
3) Speaking of Griffiths: Morin's problems are just as inviting of creativity (as Griffiths: the principle strength, I feel, of his texts) and encourage real "thinking outside the box" as Griffiths. They are challenging and provoke deep thought, drawing forth the depths of the reader's creativity.
4) The unique addition of physics-limericks: I find them strolling into my mind while poring over a difficult problem. They are funny (or annoying if you are looking for The Way To the Answer amidst equation-jungles (Morin's text does not appear to me as an uninformative equation-jungle)). They actually help reinforce the principles well, and succinctly describe some profound physical-principles.
5) The inclusion of problem-solving advice, and good habits to get into if you want to be a physicist. On that note: I recommend a read of this text even if you've thoroughly-completed your classical mechanics sequence. Morin encourages checking of the limiting case, examining your solution, etc., and other habits that are "in the spirit" of physics.

Conclusion: this text is rich, fun to read, inviting of creativity, brimming with clever and informative prose, and will help you be a better physicist. Best of all: plenty of good physics-habits are taught by this book that are beyond the scope of classical mechanics. My heartfelt recommendation.

A very good text on mechanics-lots of interesting solved problems

This is a very good text on mechanics. It assumes that the reader has already been exposed to elementary mechanics,e.g,Halliday & Resnick.
The real strength of this book lies in its many solved problems. Many interesting generalizations and limiting cases are discussed, more so than any other mechanics text that I know.

Richard Marsden is Emeritus Professor of Old English at the University of Nottingham. His published works include The Text of the Old Testament in Anglo-Saxon England (1995) and an edition of The Old English Heptateuch and 'lfric's Libellus de ueteri testamento et nouo (2008), along with other books and articles on scriptural translation and the Latin Bible.

E. Ann Matter is the William R. Kenan, Jr Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches and writes about medieval Christian culture, especially biblical interpretation and the history of spirituality. Her publications include The Voice of My Beloved: The Song of Songs in Western Medieval Christianity (1990).

About the Author
William S. C. Chang is an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineeering, University of California, San Diego. Comprehensive & comprehensible

Having tried to work through Birrell & Davies a few years ago,
I remember that the text was well written and insightful, but
just seemed too dense on certain subjects, such as the Dirac
equation in curved space.

Knowing that Parker is one of the pioneers in the field, I was
excited when the book was announced. Once I got it in my hands,
I jumped right ahead to the spinor/Dirac equation chapter and
happily found a thorough account of it, with no details omitted.

The text does of course require a background in QFT in flat space and
of classical general relativity, although a brief account of the former
is given in Chapter 1. To me, it's main advantage is the thorough
and detailed presentation of calculations.

If I had to point out a flaw - and this may sound strange -
I would say that the main advantage is also its disadvantage:
you may be lost in all the details and miss the big picture, i.e.
the calculations are clear but sometimes their motivation is not as clear.
However, this does not prevent me from appreciating the
detailed calculations, which is what a beginner needs.

In conclusion, if you need a good pedagogical introduction
to QFT in curved space, the book by Mukhanov is an excellent starter.
If you want a good overall picture of the subject, then the
monograph by Birrel & Davies is a very good resource.
If you want a text that is thorough, pedagogical and detailed,
then I think Parker & Toms will become a new standard reference.

Graduate level, mathematically rigorous

Leonard Parker is a Distinguished Professor of physics and director of the Center for Gravitation and Cosmology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is basically the founder of the study of quantum field theory in curved space-time. His has work formed the basis of research by hundreds of physicists worldwide including being cited by Stephen Hawking in his discover the creation of particles by black holes.

David Toms (Ph.D. University of Toronto) is a member of the faculty in Mathematical Physics at the University of Newcastle. He has published numerous papers in Quantum field theory, General relativity, Quantum gravity, Bose-Einstein condensation, and Statistical mechanics.

This book, positioned at the graduate level requires considerable background in classical general relativity, basic quantum field theory, and the associated mathematics. It is mathematically rigorous and could be used for a one or two semester course or by the individual researcher.

He has held the Treusch and Buchalter Chairs at the law school and teaches a wide range of public international law, international commercial law and dispute-resolution subjects. Good selection of cases.

This book is great for students and residents rotating in a pediatric intensive care unit. Cases include RSV, fulminant meningococcal septicemia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, TCA poisoning, management of a status-post Fontan child, non-accidental trauma, head injury, diabetic ketoacidosis, and more. There are about 26 cases in all. They are very thorough and include minute-by-minute management strategies and a separate discussion section to further explain current standards of management for the particular condition. My only complaint, and it's a big one, is that the book is written by a mix of Brits and Americans, and the units of measurement change case by case between traditional and SI units. I don't know if a PaCO2 of 6.82kPa is good or not! Or a glucose of 62mmol/L? I wouldn't mind if there was a page or two of conversions, which would be easy to add to the next edition. Also, there are some differences in terminology that may make you scratch your head e.g. calling PE or "pressure-equalizing" tubes "grommets." That one I kind of liked.

As usual cambridge publishes an excellent reference book that is worth every penny. this book is so helpful. i read in three days it gave me a throuogh idea on African American women writers. if you interested in such a topic , a scholar or a researcher the book is so heplul for you. bu it and you will never regret.

Dr Lawrence Weiss is a board-certified anatomic pathologist and the current chairman of pathology at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. He has published over 200 papers on varied topics in surgical pathology and hematopathology. He is also the editor of three books on hematologic malignancies and surgical pathology. In 2000, he was honored by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology as its Young Investigator of the Year.

Great overall text for lymph node pathology

As a board certified hematopathologist, I would highly recommend adding this textbook to any practicing pathologists bookshelf. Not only are the images of decent size and quality, but each section is of reasonable length to make the book a quick read. Of particular interest in some of the rare entities, is a general "how I approach this" style of writing which gives the practitioner a sense of how to approach a case they may not have much experience with.

Very good reference for residents who do not see much lymph node pathology in their training - a great complement to the WHO heme book.

Good book, very easy to read. You can almost hear Dr. Weiss's voice as you read. Obviously not 100% comprehensive, but covers pretty much everything one would 99.9% of the time encounter in lymph nodes and heme. Wonderful!

Highly recommended

This is a fantastic book. The photos are large and very clear and the text is well written. Dr. Weiss goes through the various neoplastic and non-neoplastic lymph node disorders and gives a clear and thorough differential diagnosis, along with very current use of immunohistochemical, cytogenetic, and molecular studies. Additionally there are excellent charts for those of us who are more visually inclined. I would highly recommend this book to any pathologist in training or in practice.
