There is less emphasis on the science of immunohistochemistry, and more emphasis on interpretation and its proper usage."

About the Author
John N. Drobak earned Bachelor of Science degrees in electrical engineering and management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After earning his law degree from Stanford University in 1973, he clerked for the California Court of Appeals and then practiced law for five years in New Haven, Connecticut. He joined the law faculty at Washington University in 1979, where he served as Associate Dean from 1986 to 1990, and now holds appointments as the George Alexander Madill Professor of Law in the School of Law and also in the Department of Economics in Arts and Sciences. He is the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the School of Law, a fellow in the Center in Political Economy in Arts and Sciences, and former co-director of the Business, Law, and Economics Center in the John M. Olin School of Business. In his pro bono work, he consulted with Vaclav Klaus, then Finance Minister of Czechoslovakia and now President of the Czech Republic, in connection with Czechoslovakia's voucher privatization of large government enterprises and with the Republic of Georgia in connection with the drafting of a new constitution.

About the Author
Giorgio Bertorelle currently teaches Biometry, Phylogeny Reconstruction and Conservation Genetics at the University of Ferrara, Italy. He is the president and co-founder of the Italian Society for Evolutionary Biology.

Michael W. Bruford, formerly Head of the Conservation Genetics Group at the Institute of Zoology, London, has been professor and research group leader at the Cardiff School of Biosciences since 1999, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conservation biology and molecular ecology.

Heidi C. Hauffe trained in evolutionary biology and established the first genetics laboratory at the Centro di Ecologia Alpina, Trento, Italy, in 1997. Now at the Edmund Mach Foundation, her research interests range from rodent-borne viruses to speciation to conservation genetics of alpine mammals. She is currently affiliated to the University of York, UK, and the Institute of Vertebrate Biology, CZ.

Annapaola Rizzoli is currently the coordinator of the Environmental and Natural Resources Division and head of the Wildlife Ecology and Epidemiology Group at the Edmund Mach Foundation. Her main research interests are host-parasite interactions and emerging zoonotic and vector-borne diseases.

Cristiano Vernesi is a researcher at the Edmund Mach Foundation, Trento, Italy. He is also one of the founders and scientific director of the Association 'Biosfera', a non-profit association devoted to research and teaching in conservation biology.

This theorem is both the culmination of work initiated by Brauer, Noether, Hasse and Albert and the starting point of current research in motivic cohomology theory by Voevodsky, Suslin, Rost and others. Assuming only a solid background in algebra, but no homological algebra, the book covers the basic theory of central simple algebras, methods of Galois descent and Galois cohomology, Severi-Brauer varieties, residue maps and, finally, Milnor K-theory and K-cohomology. The last chapter rounds off the theory by presenting the results in positive characteristic, including the theorem of Bloch-Gabber-Kato. The book is suitable as a textbook for graduate students and as a reference for researchers working in algebra, algebraic geometry or K-theory.

This is complemented by a discussion of four common legal issues which arise in the context of this activity: the status of the territory under administration, the status and accountability of administering authorities, the exercise of regulatory powers by international administrations, and the relationship between international and domestic actors. Alongside surveys of the existing approaches and conceptual choices, the book also includes relevant case-law and practice and lessons learned for future engagements.

About the Author
Williamson Murray is Professor Emeritus of European Military History at Ohio State University and a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Defense Analysis. He is the author of a number of books including The Changes in the European Balance of Power, 1938-1939, The Path to Ruin; Luftwaffe; German Military Effectiveness; The Air War in the Persian Gulf; Air War, 1914-1945; The Iraq War: A Military History, with Major General Robert Scales, Jr.; and A War to Be Won: Fighting the Second World War, with Allan R. Millet. He also co-edited numerous collections, including Military Innovations in the Interwar Period (1996) with Allan R. Millet and The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-2050 (2001), with MacGregor Knox.

Richard Hart Sinnreich works as an independent consultant in areas ranging from Army wargaming to defense transformation. Good food for thought

The editors of this book have put together an outstanding series of essays derived from a conference at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and later presented at the Marine Corps University, Quantico. The book's theme is stated in the subtitle; "The Importance of History to the Military Profession;" its view point is that the study of military history is critical for the military. There are two introductory chapters. The first, by Editor Williamson Murray, argues that only by studying military history can a soldier begin to understand war. Not that there aren't pitfalls and, "for history to be of any use, its very complexities demand skeptical inquiry rather than reliance on a smattering of inevitably oversimplified historical anecdotes." The second chapter, by eminent military historian Sir Michael Howard, argues that only military history can provide contextual understanding for many more conventional historians in explaining many issues, such as the impact of World War's I and II on society.

The rest of the book is divided into two sections; the first focuses on the relationship of military history to the military profession, and the second looks at historical cases that illustrate recurring military problems. The essays rely on academics and on military officers both of whom provide insight into history's role in understanding war. The authors include many familiar names such as LTG (R) Paul Van Riper, USMC, MG (R) Jonathan Bailey, British Army, John Gooch, Colin S. Gray, and the two editors themselves.

If you believe military history allows a better understanding of war, or if you just enjoy military history, this book will give you insight into the positive aspects of the field and its pitfalls - and there are many. At the same time, if you tend to believe today's problems are unique, read the book so that you can find the true path.

An Excellent Defense of The Value of Studying Military History For Military Professionals

This book is an intriguing collection of essays from American and British civilian and military thinkers on the importance of history to the military profession. Included among this book's essays are thoughtful examinations of the relationship between military history and the history of war, British and American Marine views on he relevance of history to serving military professionals, the sometimes awkward relationship between history and the military education, the role of Thucydides as an educator, a subtle and excellent examination of Clausewitz's views on history and the future strategic world, as well s some intriguing case studies on the Victorian Royal Navy, the Russo-Japanese War, the British army's readiness between WWI and WWII, and terrorism. The closing essay of the book, a frightening examination of the gaps between history and the future of civil-military relations, gives plenty of food for thought in this well-thought out and relevant work.

A brilliant intellectual defense of the study of military history

American strategic thought is cyclic. Ever since the end of the Civil War the study of military history has fallen in and out of style, even within U.S. Military War Colleges and Command and Staff Colleges. During the 1960s, the organizational and business accounting theories of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and his "whiz kid" advisors stated that war could be reduced to number crunching and statistical analysis. As a result military history suffered. By the 1980s, military history was reborn with the wide acceptance of the writing of Carl von Clausewitz. The application of his theories played a major part in the complete rebuilding of American military operational art and the success of Operation Desert Storm. By the mid-1990s, the tide began to shift. "New" theorists began to opine on the wonders of "network-centric" warfare and "effects-based operations". Once again the study of history was replaced by computer networks and mathematical formulas.

"The Past as Prologue" is a brilliant defense of the need for military officers and policymakers to continue to vigorous and constant study of military history and resist attempts to reduce warfare to scientific analysis. The book is a collection of essays from some of the top military theorists and historians of our time. The famous historian Michael Howard's essay on the role of military history in warfare is worth the price of the book alone. LtGen Paul Van Riper's essay demonstrates that military history is not for other academics, but was a critical element in his success as a battlefield commander. His respect for the topic lead him to be a major force in the rebirth of professional military education within the United States Marine Corps.

The essays on Thucydides and Clausewitz clearly show their continued relevance in today's post 9/11 world. The second half of the book is a collection of essays that demonstrate how ignoring the lessons of history led to eventual battlefield defeat. While excellent, essays they did seem to drift a bit away from the central themes of the book and often got bogged down in detail.

The first 2/3 of the book were outstanding and should be required reading during the first week of all major defense colleges and universities, not to mention the need for policy makers to take the time to delve into these critical topics.

Best introduction to quantum mechanics I have ever seen.

Best quantum mechanics textbook I have ever come across. This is a great introduction to quantum mechanics because of the way it addresses all of quantum theory through the lens of quantum information. Thinking from this point of view helps demystify concepts such as wave particle duality and the uncertainty principle which really helps beginners better understand quantum mechanics and gain intuition for quantum phenomena. This book is also great for someone who already knows a good deal of quantum mechanics, but don't expect to find too much hardcore phenomenology. This book is really heavily invested in concepts rather than surveying and explaining in detail a great deal of complicated quantum mechanics experiments. I was into my fourth semester of quantum mechanics courses when I read this and I was struck by all the profound insights and exercises in this book. I have never before seen such a clear and compact look at thermodynamics and quantum information elsewhere. I have personally recommended this book to several of my peers.
