About the Author
Christopher Kobrak holds a BA degree in philosophy from Rutgers University and MA, MBA, and PhD degrees from Columbia University in history, finance/accounting, and business history. He is a CPA and has spent ten years working in numerous business positions for Sterling Drug, Inc. He teaches corporate finance and business history at ESCP-EAP, concentrating on international finance, financial theory, history of capital markets, and corporate governance. His publications include: National Cultures and International Competition: The Experience of Schering AG, 1851 1950 (Cambridge University Press), European Business, Dictatorship and Political Risk, 1920 1945, edited with Per Hansen, and articles and reviews in many business history journals. He has taught at Columbia University, Warsaw University, and Toulouse University, from which he received his Habilitation in Management. He is currently working on communications about the economic contribution of family businesses, corporate governance, and foreign direct investment in the service sector.

globalisation

Globalisation is not a new thing, as Kobrak reminds us in this authoritative and readable monograph. In the 19th and 20th centuries, as the US rose to prominence, it often required external capital to develop a virgin continent. Deutsche Bank was one of the financiers, that provided this capital.

The narrative describes long ago travails. Of investments that did well and others that went totally bankrupt. In the midst of much of this was Deutsche Bank, who typically provided loans for infrastructure. Notably the railroads that would span the United States. One railroad, Northern Pacific, gets an entire chapter, delineating how it fell on hard times.

The 20th century also brought with it 2 world wars. In which the bank was on the other side for both. But now, at least during peacetime, capital often flowed from the US to Europe. Being versatile, the bank found much business here, facilitating this flow.

Granted, in places, the book makes for dry reading. But fans of history and economics should still like the story.

About the Author
Eric Priest completed his PhD thesis with T. G. Cowling at Leeds in 1969, having moved to a tenured position at St Andrews University in 1968. He gradually built up an internationally renowned Solar MHD group there and is now a highly active Emeritus Professor. He has edited fifteen books and written over 450 research papers. His book Solar Magnetohydrodynamics (1982) became a standard text in the field and has been completely rewritten from scratch to be reborn as Magnetohydrodynamics of the Sun. Honours include being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (2002) and being awarded the Hale Prize of the American Astronomical Society (2002) and the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (2009).

About the Author
Rick Durrett received his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford University in 1976. After nine years at UCLA, he came to Cornell University in 1985, where he is a professor of mathematics. He is the author of 8 books and more than 170 journal articles on a wide variety of topics, and he has supervised more than 40 Ph.D. students. He is a member of the National Academy of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Terrible textbook, filled with errata

I'm currently enrolled in an introduction to probability class at my university and, unfortunately, I'm forced to use this book. This is definitely one of the most frustrating textbooks I've ever had to use in my entire academic career. Many topics aren't explained well and the "example problems" skip countless steps -- it's like you already have to be familiar with the material to understand what's going on. Seriously, you'd be better off learning from Wikipedia. If this isn't bad enough, the book is absolutely full of errors, including the answer key at the back of the book that provides solutions to odd problems.

Nothing like spending 30 minutes confused, frustrated, and stressed because I'm being told I have the wrong answer when I have the correct one. This book blows, don't buy it unless you have to.

A Good Start

I found the book to be just fine. While it does have several typos and a few incorrect answers in the back of the book, it is not a bad text book. Probability is a subject that allows its users to "think out side the box". Its not meant to be a read once and never think again subject. In that regard, this book does a good job. I found that at times this book felt cumbersome. When I thought about the topics and on occasion referenced previous pages, it flowed smoothly. The purpose of this textbook is to teach by example, if that is not a learning style that you thrive in, consider buying "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" by John Rice as it focuses on a more traditional learning style.

A thin alternative to the standard textbooks

I taught a course using this textbook called "Intro to Probability" for mathematicians, statisticians and scientists. There were about 120 students enrolled in 2 sections, all with calculus background including series. It went very well. The book gets to the point quickly. For instance, random variables are right in the first few sections, unlike some books that first treat combinatorics at length. The examples are excellent. For instance, in addition to covering the Monty Hall problem, Durrett then reviews a recent news item of a social scientist who used this to explain a phenomenon which was previously believed to be a case of cognitive dissonance in primates. I also like that in the final chapter Durrett treats some elementary topics in statistics, such as the 95% confidence interval, because that is not emphasized enough in standard probability textbooks. The only minor drawback I see is that in the section on the Central Limit Theorem, there is not much in the way of a proof. Of course in the standard textbooks the "proofs" are not really proofs anyway. He does give the proof of the Weak Law of Large Numbers and states the Strong Law of Large Numbers. In our class, we spent the last 2 weeks going over a proof of 2 special cases of the CLT for the p=1/2 binomial distributions and for sums of exponentials (i.e., Gamma distributions) which leads to Stirling's formula. I also used Durrett's excellent coverages of additivity of expectation and Chebyshev's inequality to briefly explain the Borel-Cantelli lemma (1) and motivate the proof of the SLLN. The exercises in this book are great. It is true that 1 or 2 have typos in the back of the book. But we coded alternative problems based on his into WeBWorK, a computerized online HW program, anyway. With a small amount of effort the instructor can catch all the typos and even use them to raise the discussion of things like checking answers against intuition, etc. As one previous reviewer said, with a good instructor at hand, the few typos are not a problem at all.

About the Author
Robert Scott is a nationally recognized scholar and teacher in the fields of contracts, commercial transactions and bankruptcy. He was Lewis F. Powell Jr. Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law from 1982-2003, and William L. Matheson & Robert M. Morgenthau Distinguished Professor from 2001-03. In 2003 he was named an inaugural recipient of the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professorship. He has delivered numerous papers and published extensively in law journals. He has co-authored four books on contracts and commercial transactions. Among his many articles are six that he co-authored with Prof. Charles Goetz that set the standard for the economic analysis of the law of contracts. Paul Stephan is an expert on international business and Soviet and post-Soviet legal systems who spent his career studying and writing about the globalization of the world economy and the transition away from Soviet-style socialism. He joined the Virginia faculty in 1979 and was the Percy Brown Jr. Professor of Law from 1991 to 2003. He has written extensively on international law, corruption, and the history of the Cold War, as well as on taxation and constitutional law. He has worked in Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Albania, and Slovakia on behalf of the U.S. Treasury and in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan on behalf of the International Monetary Fund.

Nicolai J. Foss is Professor of Strategy and Organization at the Copenhagen Business School and Professor of Knowledge-based Value Creation at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. He also holds a number of part-time and visiting professorships at other European universities.

Peter G. Klein is Associate Professor of Applied Social Sciences and Director of the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the University of Missouri. He also holds positions at the University of Missouri's Truman School of Public Affairs and the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration.

The economic theory of the firm

I got so much great info out of this book on the economic function of the firm, the reason firms are created, the limits of the firm, and the defining attributes of entrepreneurialism. While it won't give tips on managing a successful business, it is very helpful to understand the underlying economics of one's position as a mid to senior manager, since economics will inform why managers are really there and what purpose they're serving.

Unfortunately it's a challenge to extract this information as the book is poorly organized. The key concepts are not presented in any particular order, just scattered randomly. Many concepts are repeated redundantly, with whole paragraphs reappearing verbatim. The entire 1st chapter didn't need to be there. It's just 20 pages of vague descriptions of alternate theories, giving no substance of those theories and leaving the explanation and rebuttal to later chapters.

Here is how I would have structured it,

I. The defining characteristic of an entrepreneur is judgment under conditions of uncertainty
1 There is a start-up bias in entrepreneur study, which considers an entrepreneur to be someone who founds a firm. There is also a bias that considers an entrepreneur to be someone who is self employed. This need not be the case. Diversification, restructuring, vertical integration, outsourcing, are all entrepreneurial activity, whether or not there is a start up or self employment
a) Other traits that are associated with an entrepreneur, charismatic leadership, alertness, creativity, are not the essential elements. An entrepreneur may or may not have those traits. The defining trait is judgment under uncertainty
2 Uncertainty is not risk. Risk is when you know the probability, distribution, and expectation of a random variable. Uncertainty is when you don't know the probability. There's no formulaic way to make decisions under uncertainty, it requires judgment
a) Under risk, it is easy to use the language of probability theory to communicate to investors and others in control of resources what one's beliefs about the situation is. Under uncertainty, without numeric probabilities, it is harder to communicate one's beliefs. Therefore, entrepreneurs usually must start a firm to realize their vision.
b) Since, by definition, uncertain systems can not be reliably assessed in terms of its marginal product, entrepreneurial judgment can not be assigned a price, and can not be bought and sold in the same way as other factors of production. Again, since an entrepreneurs can't sell their judgment, they usually must start a firm to make economic use of their judgment
c) The entrepreneur must have some degree of ownership in order to profit from judgment The functions of the entrepreneur and capital owner can never be completely separated
d) Advice is a service that can be priced and traded, but not judgment The entrepreneur must make the ultimate judgment of what advice to listen to
3 Entrepreneurial judgment is precisely that extra ingredient added to mundane skills such as collecting data, analytical skills, and leadership skills, that makes a firm tick

II. Why do firms exist at all? Why isn't each worker their own independent contractor?
1 Firms of one person do exist. Firms of one person are possible but they must accept all other factor prices and types as they are. They can not try produce the factors in a different way, or give employees a new kind of task that there is not already a market for
a) Importantly, successful entrepreneurship often entails discovering new attributes of existing goods, and discovering new combinations. The entrepreneur must directly own the goods in order to profit once the economic viability of the new attributes are proven
b) If an entrepreneur's new ideas are successful, there is a risk that their counterparties will raise prices to try to get the extra money themselves. An entrepreneur can avoid this by purchasing complementary assets earlier
2 The intensity of the division of labor is limited by transaction cost. A business owner would rather directly manage employees when the transaction cost of hiring contractors is greater than the transaction cost of internal organization

III. If firms have all these advantages over independent workers, why doesn't all production eventually organize into a single firm?
1 One firm that produces everything can never work for all the same reasons a communist government can never work. The managers would be engaged in central planning, they would not have the local knowledge possessed by respective market actors to make informed decisions. Without market prices of each good and factor of production, there would be no possibility of economic calculation, and no way to efficiently allocate resources and plan future production
2 A firm can never grow to the size that it is both the unique producer and user of an intermediate product
3 In sum, how small a firm can be is limited by transaction cost and by the need to create new types of goods and jobs. How large a firm can be is limited by the need to have prices determined by the free choice of market actors, for economic calculation to be possible and for local knowledge to be propagated through price signals

IV. A business owner can delegate judgment to employees
1 If a senior manager or owner hires a manager, and the manager is not only responsible for tasks and processes but is entrusted with judgment, then that manager's job has an entrepreneurial element
a) In this way an established business can always be engaging in entrepreneurial activity, even if it is
no longer a start up
2 A business owner can allow more freedom and ownership to employees to encourage innovation and allow them to keep the rewards of their increased performance. However, there is a risk that hired managers might take their knowledge and judgment and leave to join another organization or start a new firm.
3 The business owner must balance. Too much freedom and the gains of an employee might not be remitted to the firm. Too little freedom and the incentive to innovate is taken away

V. Entrepreneurial judgment is essential to understanding how the market operates
1 Mainstream, neoclassical Walras-Marshall-Samuelson-style economics reduces market action to aggregates, curves and calculus. It is the currently prevailing paradigm, and treats the market process as mechanical and mathematical

About the Author
Robert J. Asaro was awarded his Ph.D. in Materials Science With Distinction from Stanford University in 1972. He was a Professor of Engineering at Brown University from 1975-1989, and at the University of California, San Diego since 1989. Professor Asaro has led programs involved with the design, fabrication, and full-scale structural testing of large composite structures including high performance ships and marine civil structures. His list of publications includes more than 170 research papers in the leading professional journals and conference proceedings. He received the NSF Special Creativity Award for his research in 1983 and 1987. Professor Asaro also received the TMS Champion H. Mathewson Gold Medal in 1991. He has made fundamental contributions to the theory of crystal plasticity and to dislocation theory. He served as a founding member of the Advisory Committee for NSF's Office of Advanced Computing that founded the Supercomputer Program in the U.S. He has also served on the NSF Materials Advisory Committee. He has been an affiliate with Los Alamos National Laboratory for over 20 years and has served as consultant to Sandia National Laboratory. Professor Asaro has been recognized by ISI as a highly cited author in Materials Science. Vlado A. Lubarda received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1980. He was a Professor at the University of Montenegro from 1980-1989, a Fulbright Fellow and Visiting Associate Professor at Brown University from 1989-1991, and at Arizona State University from 1992-1997. Since 1998, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Applied Mechanics at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Lubarda has made significant contributions to phenomenological theories of large deformation elastoplasticity, dislocation theory, damage and micromechanics, and biomechanics. He is the author of more than 100 journal and conference publications and two books: Strength of Materials (1985) and Elastoplasticity Theory (2002). He has served as a research panelist for NSF and as a reviewer for international journals of mechanics, materials science, and applied mathematics. Professor Lubarda was elected in 2000 to the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is also a recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California.

The commentary to each proposed rule contains a critical analysis of the investment treaty jurisprudence and makes extensive reference to the decisions of other international courts and tribunals, as well as to the relevant experience of municipal legal orders. Solutions are elaborated in respect of the most intractable problems that have arisen in the cases, including: the effect of an exclusive jurisdiction clause in an investment agreement with the host state; reliance on the MFN clause in relation to jurisdictional provisions; and, the legitimate scope of derivative claims by shareholders.

Zachary Douglas is a lecturer at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Law, a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, and a barrister with Matrix Chambers, London. He is also a member of Gray's Inn, the British Institute of International & Comparative Law and the American Society of International Law, and has practised law in England, France and Russia.
