Christopher Haslett is the principal propagation adviser at Ofcom, the UK communication industries regulator. As well as experience conducting and directing research projects, he has many years' industrial radio-planning experience with Cable and Wireless plc., and as director of planning and optimization at Aircom International Ltd., where he directed the optimization of UMTS networks. He was also a senior lecturer at the University of Glamorgan.

I seldom have the desire to write any type of a review for a text that I would not recommend to someone else. However, I feel the need to say that if you are searching for a text to introduce you to radio wave propagation...just keep browsing. This is NOT the one to get. There is really very little of value here, in my humble opinion. This text has very little detail on any aspect of propagation and instead refers the reader to other works, such as the ITU-R publications, for further details, far too often. I was so relieved that I purchased it at a huge discount from a used bookseller.

An excellent lavishly illustrated head and neck pathology textbook/atlas

Dr. Margaret Brandwein-Gensler has created an excellent and unique head and neck pathology book. The text contains essential information about the entities that makes it easy using this book everyday when encountering cases in the practice of surgical pathology. While concise, the book covers most of the entities in head and neck pathology. It is well organized, making finding information very easy. For each entity, there is an introduction with clinical features, and sections detailing histopathology (and cytopathology in many cases), immunohistochemistry findings and differential diagnosis. The pictures, which are numerous, are of excellent quality and in most cases each entity is illustrated with several images showing variations in pathologic presentations and sometimes even pitfalls. Gross pictures and radiologic images complement the histologic pictures. When appropriate, tables are available and include differential diagnoses, classifications and summary of publications. And as in many of the Cambridge University Press books, the price is very reasonable, particularly considering the numerous illustration of the book. I highly recommend this book to practicing surgical pathologist and pathology residents.

an excellent head and neck pathology textbook

As a third year resident, I need to start preparing for my board examination. Head and neck diseases are part of the examination. I searched the literature to find a good boook for it. The ideal book for me is: numerous pictures, detailed figure ligands, simple and clear text, easy to read and remember, and clarified differentiation diagnosis. One of my colleagues bought this book and he recommended to me. I really like it and it is exactly what I am looking for. In addition to what I mensioned before, the author also put her clinical experience in this book, such as for a high grade salivary gland carcinoma case, the first specimen she got was a positive metastatic lymph node, the second specimen was a minor salivary gland with carcinoma in it, usually we probably stopped here. However, what she did for this case is she led the surgeon to find the primary site of this tumor, the parotid gland which is most common location for this tumor. I think this is very useful for my future practice. You will find a lot of useful tables for differentiation diagnosis. Good book, many thanks for Dr. Brandwein-Gensler.

It is such a valuable add to every resident in path or ENT. Dr Gensler goes thorugh each topic in a very precise , concise manner. The information is presented in a clear format that pleases me personally! Wheather you are a first year struggling through your first Pleomorphic adenoma slide or a 4th year trying to fine-tune your ENTpath diagnostic ability, this book is a MUST!!! An Extraordinary Analysis of Holmes' Jurisprudence

Frederic R. Kellogg's new book on the legal thought of Justice Holmes is one of the most useful studies I have ever read on the Justice's jurisprudential thought. Even if the reader cannot accept all the elements of Kellogg's thesis, his analysis is so rich in insights and incisive in content that one nonetheless benefits enormously. Kellogg is, of course, the author of "The Formative Essays of Justice Holmes" (1984), which did so much to direct scholarly attention to OWH's early essays published prior to his epic "The Common Law" in 1871. Here again he is developing his theory that the key to Holmes' later period as state judge and Supreme Court Justice is this early period of his writing up to and including TCL. There is so much gold here that a short review can only touch upon a few of the analytical points put forward by Kellogg.

One of the author's goals is to shock us out of the long-time assumption that OWH was a "legal positivist." This ties into the author's primary thesis that OWH eventually settled upon a common law theory of judicial interpretation (on both the Massachusetts SJC and the Supreme Court) that sought its cues from the sentiments and feelings of the society. Kellogg argues that in this sense OWH did not wish to exclude "moral" considerations from judicial analysis. Employing such an approach, OWH adopted a position generally favoring judicial restraint until the community's viewpoint had become palpable.

Echoing his earlier book, the author maintains that the keys to OWH's legal philosophy are to be found not in TCL but earlier in the essays published while he edited the "American Law Review." These early essays apparently were OWH conversing with himself as he searched for key principles in legal analysis. Hence, he abandons the effort to establish legal categories based on duties; moves to an external/objective standard of liability; and eventually adopts a common law historical, empirical, case by case, approach to judicial interpretation. Kellogg is to be particularly commended for recognizing the critical impact of the Scottish Enlightenment on American philosophy. OWH's periods of service as state and Supreme Court judge are analyzed to explore his actual reliance upon these concepts.

Along the way the author touches upon numerous key jurisprudential thinkers and concepts: Dworkin; H.L.A. Hart; Fuller; Bentham (and particularly the work of Gerald Postema); Austin; Maine; Pollock; Dicey and John Dewey. The work of prominent scholars also is touched upon: Horwitz; Alschuler (one of OWH's severest current critics); Posner; and Tushnet. Justice Scalia's "A Matter of Interpretation" also pops up.

Much, much more is discussed in a book that is under 200 pages in length. The research is stupendous; the bibliography extremely valuable; the analysis cogent and readable. However, I don't think this should be the first book one reads on Holmes unless one has a solid background in jurisprudential thought. A better approach is to read one of the many Holmes biographies that address his judicial philosophy --Ted White's "Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: Law and the Inner Self" being by far the best volume in this regard. A book to savor, argue with, reconsider, and mull over. As good as they come in this area.

Not very readable

I tried to read this book a couple of years ago, intending to review it for a legal magazine, but was unable to finish it. This was the case even though I am a lawyer who has read much about Holmes and much about legal philosophy, and, in a legal magazine, I have published an article on Holmes and book reviews on both subjects. When I was reading Kellogg's book, I jotted down a few sentences for possible use in my review and I will use them here. I wouldn't have bothered to post a review of this book on amazon.com, but, having just read Ronald H. Clark's review, I want to provide balance to his excessive praise.

Kellogg's book is not well written. He writes, "Over the centuries since Hobbes, positivists have kept issues of legitimacy in the forefront of their thinking. For the theory of common law, it has, surprisingly, been largely ignored since the eighteenth century." (36) What is the antecedent of "it"? He uses redundancies, such as "ignore, and thus disregard" (35), and "segregation or separation" (40). Some of Kellogg's writing it too abstract. In successive sentences (43-44), he refers to "the foundationalist and teleological strain that has characterized legal positivism since Hobbes," but does not say how it has done so, and to "the subtle poison of teleology [that] crept into The Common Law and certain of Holmes's judicial decisions," but does not say how it did so. These statements have limited value without elaboration.

Kellogg is also verbose. He writes, for example, that Holmes "came, through analytical and historical criticism, to reject the former - Austin's system of duties and rights - as an Aristotelian attempt to assign potency and actuality to fixed natures or essences, and instead to view the actual law as revealing the historical emergence and transformation of legal concepts born of repeated inquiry into classes of repetitive disputes." (39) A briefer version of this sentence might be, "The life of the law has not been logic: it has been experience."

When Kellogg quotes this line, he replaces the colon with a comma. (54) Here, though, Kellogg is not alone; I see the line more often quoted with a comma or a semicolon than with a colon. Why can't one of the most famous lines in the legal literature be quoted with the correct punctuation? I suppose it's because, instead of looking in The Common Law, writers quote from secondary sources that got it wrong.

About the Author
Jennifer M. Brown is Professor of Forensic Psychology and Director of Crime and Justice @ Surrey at the University of Surrey. She has been involved with the Police Service for over 20 years, having previously held posts as a Research Manager for Hampshire Police and a Syndicate Director on the senior command course at Bramshill.

Elizabeth A. Campbell is Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology and Programme Director for the doctorate in Clinical Psychology in the Section of Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow. She is also Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist with the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Trust, and past president of the British Psychological Society. She acts as a consultant to the Metropolitan Police and the Serious and Organised Crime Agency.

Does what it says it does

One of the first qualifications of this tome, is that The Cambridge Handbook of Forensic Psychology is not intended as a cover to cover textbook on the subject, rather a reference point for several separate fields existing under the broad umbrella of Forensic Psyc.

So in my stubborn way I had to read this thing right through. Took me around 6-8 months usually 2-3 chapters per week.

The textbook is indeed a reference point for many topics, although was still useful for the brief summaries of information in each section. Like all multi-authored non-fiction the quality was highly variable across chapters. the sections on risk management stood out and Part II: Assessments was one of the strongest sections.

A surprisingly balanced and compassionate chapter was provided by Margaret Wilson on Terrorism research in psychology.

Chapters on Burglary and 'Criminal Careers' appeared weaker and seemed over-theorized with less evidence bases, and the majority of chapters in the final section Research were jargon heavy and I found myself highly skeptical of many methods described.

Overall am I glad I tramped through this thing? I think so but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the process to others as more generic textbooks on each topic may be more applicable and satisfying.

About the Author
Dr Inderjit Chopra is an Alfred Gessow Professor in Aerospace Engineering and Director of the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center at the University of Maryland. Dr Chopra works on fundamental problems related to aeromechanics of helicopters including aeromechanical stability, active vibration control, modeling of composite blades, rotor head health monitoring, aeroelastic optimization, smart structures, micro air vehicles and comprehensive aeromechanics analyses of bearingless, tilt-rotor, servo-flap, coaxial, compound, teetering and circulation control rotors. Dr Chopra has authored more than 160 archival journal papers and 260 conference proceedings papers. He has been an associate editor of the Journal of the American Helicopter Society (1987-91), the AIAA Journal of Aircraft (1987-present) and the Journal of Intelligent Materials and Systems (1997-present). He has been elected Fellow in the following societies: the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Helicopter Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Aeronautical Society of India and the National Institute of Aerospace.

Dr Jayant Sirohi is an expert in high power density solid state actuators, multifunctional structures, multi-mission capable micro/unmanned aerial vehicles and rotorcraft design. He is a professor in the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department at the University of Texas, Austin. Dr Sirohi had previously worked at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation where he was a Staff Engineer in the Advanced Concept group.

The BEST signal processing book

This is the ultimate perfect book !!
I had Oppenheim and Lathi's books.
I would like to compare the three books: Oppenheim's, Lathi's, and Mandal's (this book).

Oppenheim's Signals and Systems (2nd Edition) teaches analog and digital signals alternatively.
This is good to compare difference between analog and digital systems,
but some important concepts are not detail enough (i.g. LTI property, convolution, etc)

Lathi's Linear Systems and Signals, 2nd Edition is very clear,
but the teaching order is different from the way taught in many universities.
(Laplace and z transform comes before Fouirer transform)
For self-study, Lathi's book is one of the best book.

This book (Mandel's) contains the strength of both books above.
1. Independence between analog chapters and digital chapters.
(You can directly go to digital chapters without understanding analog chapters)
2. Systematic organization of chapters
3. Lots of figures (it even has small chapter on "graphical method for convolution")
4. Lots of examples
5. Covers FIR/IIR filter design deeper than other books do

This is by far the best textbook on signals and systems.

Brief.

Well, I bought this book because it was required for my class and my professor said he heard great things about this book through the reviews, saying how well the example problems are solved, etc. He was either lying or didn't care considering current experience with the book and the really s***ty excuses for reviews. The book, despite providing a good amount of detail, only provides the most trivial problems for examples. It essentially crams a whole bunch of information into a some paragraphs, enough for you to get the idea behind what it's saying but barely feels like enough to tackle any of the problems at the end. There are no answers in the back to check your work and even worse is that they throw problems in the Appendix. If anyone is really serious about learning Continuous and Discrete Time Signals and Systems and this book isn't required, look elsewhere.

I am writing a book on FFTs and so happen to purchase this book without benefit of a lot of reviews. And what a surprise the book was. It is just plain fantastic. All concepts explained beautifully, no example step too trivial. The authors do a tremendous job of explaining and demonstrating all concepts with crystal clear clarity. I am very impressed.

The book should be THE text book for DSP. Bar none. - Charan Langton
