Dr Kristi L. Koenig is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of Homeland Security, Disaster and Emergency Medicine, Emergency Management, and Emergency Medical Services. She has been an invited consultant to the Joint Commission, Federal Emergency Management Agency, State of California, and Government of Taiwan. She is Senior Health Policy Advisor for the Institute for Global and Regional Readiness in Washington, DC and Consultant to the American Medical Association on Core Disaster Life Support. She serves as the Director of Public Health Preparedness for the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

Dr Carl H. Schultz is an internationally recognized expert and researcher in the field of Disaster and Emergency Medicine. He has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and his investigations have resulted in two first-author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine. He chairs the Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians and has served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense, the Joint Commission, and the State of Israel. Dr Schultz has faculty appointments at universities in Belgium and Italy. He is a professor of emergency medicine and Director of Disaster Medical Services at the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

Disaster Medicine

If you truly want to read a great book on Disaster Management I would recommend the book by Gregory Ciottone on Disaster Medicine . I am currently teaching content out of his book to Medical Personal in the Philippines. His book is much more compressive on the subject. In Jan 2014, We will be using his book in all the course we teach. Thank you for an outstanding book. I am looking forward to the updated book that comes out in 2015.

By Disaster by default
Simply not useful. Too much in some places and too little in others. I was hoping for an update on what is going on in the field and this disappoints. I'll wait for the next edition of the other established texts.

George Harris is Chancellor Professor of Philosophy at the College of William and Mary. Thoughtful, Important Book

This is a really thoughtful and illuminating discussion on a really important topic. Other philosophers deal with tragedy, but no other philosopher I've seen offers as broad or deep an account of tragedy as Harris. This book is not a casual or breezy read, but neither is it any kind of mysterious piece of philosophical jargon and theory. Harris writes in a careful, straightforward style that should be accessible to anyone who wishes to think hard along with him about human lives and suffering. This is a must-read for anyone interested in tragedy.

About the Author
Robert Bittlestone studied economics at the University of Cambridge. He is the founder of Metapraxis Ltd, a company specialising in the detection of early warnings for multinational companies. He is the author of numerous business articles and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce.

James Diggle is Professor of Greek and Latin at Cambridge and a Fellow of Queens' College. His publications include The Textual Tradition of Euripides' Orestes (Oxford University Press, 1991), and Euripidea: Collected Essays (Oxford University Press, 1994), Theophrastus: Characters (0521853575). He was University Orator at Cambridge for eleven years, and has published a selection of his speeches in Cambridge Orations 1982-1993 (0521466180).

John Underhill is Chair of Stratigraphy at the University of Edinburgh and Associate Professor at the Department for Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University.

A detailed presentation of a plausible theory

Robert Bittlestone's "Odysseus Unbound" is a massive book, nearly 600 pages filled with excellent illustrations (maps, photographs, aerial photographs, satellite images) and a highly detailed narrative explaining the development of and evidence for the author's theory: that Homeric Age Ithaca, the kingdom of Odysseus, was not located on the modern island of Ithaki, but instead on the western peninsula of the nearby island of Cephalonia. The evidence presented is complex, involving literary sources, geology, and archaeology, but a critical portion of the author's argument is whether in Homeric times this western peninsula was separated from Cephalonia by a sea channel since closed up by earthquake-induced rockfalls.

Although Bittlestone is "only" an enthusiastic amateur, his research has been reviewed and backed by his professional co-authors, one a professor of Greek and Latin and the other a geologist specializing in the Ionian island area.

I find Bittlesone's analysis to be persuasive, but as yet -- and he recognizes this -- the evidence is not wholly conclusive. This may come in the next several years with additional geological work to confirm the existence of the sea channel and with archaeological surveys to study various associated sites.

A really great read, it really made me think about and formulate my own ideas

Odysseus Unbound was a wonderful book to read. Being that i love Greece and the Odyssey I truly loved it. The way it was written was great, the way it was explained with pictures and diagrams was also wonderful. The excerpts and clues were amazing to read and I really felt as if i was traveling in Ancient Ithaca.

Just a few days before i bought the book I was reading the Odyssey and it said the Ithaca lies low and away, the farthest out to sea, and I thought how could modern Ithaca be that? Then this book comes out and answers me. I truly loved it and i don't know how else to explain how much it means to me now. I can feel that Odysseus was a real person, and that some sort of journey took place. It was just soooooo amazing and i highly reccomend it for anyone who loved Greece, "Homer", or the Odyssey.

Beautiful and Convincing!

Who wouldn't be fascinated by the presumption, if nothing else, of the premise: Odysseus' Ithaka found after two and a half millennia! But Bittlestone's book, instead of a grueling epic, is a quiet, beautiful story of information-age discovery. It shows how incredibly far an intelligent amateur can go when backed up by the power of our technology. Bittlestone attacks the mystery with the might of GPS location finding, LandSat photos, internet advice from true experts...and a little true Sherlock Holmesian deduction. (He even quotes from Holmes a few times!) The photos are beautiful, the logic is elegant, the science is very educational, and the conclusion is convincing!

When I Paint My Masterpiece

This book was a long time coming, and worth the wait. Dr. O'Keefe takes the reader through this important field with magisterial insight and authority. He makes particularly acute observations on the Napoleomic wars and the attempts to preserve cultural sites at that time.
Most of all, this book is just plain exciting reading. As a prose stylist, Dr. O'Keefe ranks among the greats.
For centuries to come, this book will be crucial to anyone doing research in the protection of cultural treasures and of great interest to the lay reader as well. At least until the Deathly Hallows is released, this book is certain to dominate everyone's summer beach reading this season.

Building on the fundamentals of floating point representation and numerical error, a thorough treatment of numerical linear algebra and eigenvector/eigenvalue problems is provided. By studying how these algorithms parallelize, the reader is able to explore parallelism inherent in other computations, such as Monte Carlo methods.

About the Author
Ronald W. Shonkwiler is a Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has authored or co-authored over 50 research papers in areas of functional analysis, mathematical biology, image processing algorithms, fractal geometry, neural networks and Monte Carlo optimization methods. His algorithm for monochrome image comparison is part of a US patent for fractal image compression. He has co-authored two other books, An Introduction to the Mathematics of Biology and The Handbook of Stochastic Analysis and Applications.

Lew Lefton is the Director of Information Technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he has built and maintained several computing clusters which are used to implement parallel computations. Prior to that he was a tenured faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at the University of New Orleans. His academic interests are in differential equations, applied mathematics, numerical analysis (in particular, finite element methods) and scientific computing.

Good introductory text on MEG

Most of the MEG texts begin with mathematical formulation of electro-magnetic phenomena and signal analysis. This might be overwhelming for a clinician. Most often, a clinical epileptologist is looking for some understanding of MEG and some learning about it as a tool in decision making. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the field with nearly no recourse to matrix algebra or differential equations. It provides an excellent insight into MEG and its use as a clinical tool. It also gives a decent discussion about the use of MEG in epilepsy, esp. non-lesional epilepsy in childhood.
Personally, I would wish that the book also contained a chapter on different software used for source localization and compare and contrast them. This would have helped people who want to start learning these software and use it for processing actual patient data.
Overall, the single best introductory text on MEG, i-m-h-o.

Outstanding overview of the complexities of commercialization

I am using this text in a commercializing biomaterials course and highly recommend it to graduate students and post-docs who want to enter the world of start-up biotechnology. I think it would also be very helpful to junior faculty who are thinking about commercializing their research. It is brilliantly constructed to walk you through the basics of taking your research from the bench to bedside and the challenges you are going to face along the way. I also found the author's use of vignettes and specific examples very helpful to illustrate complex points. This book won't write your business plan for you but should help you do your market analysis and give you the questions to ask when you initiate disclosures to your university's Technology Transfer office. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Text for Understanding Commercialization Strategies

We have used this text at the University at Buffalo School of Management Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership in a program called High Tech CEL for the past two years. The program was developed to help early stage life sciences companies find a pathway to commercialization. This text is a valuable tool that takes sometimes complicated pathways and represents them in easy to understand language and diagrams that almost anyone can follow. Shreefal Mehta does a great job of distilling tons of material down into a tight compact text that can be used as both a textbook and a reference guide. Everyone involved in the life sciences industries should have one copy on their desk and couple more on their office shelves to hand out. Highly recommended!
