About the Author
John Burton, M.D., has been the Residency Program Director in Emergency Medicine and a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Albany Medical College in Albany, NY, since 2006. From 1999 to 2003, Dr. Burton was the Medical Director for Maine Emergency Medical Services and, from 1995 to 2006, he worked in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He was the founding Research Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center. Dr Burton's areas of research interest are procedural sedation and analgesia, emergency medical services, and management of cardiovascular emergencies. He has published extensively in the emergency medicine literature on these and related topics. He has received awards and peer recognition throughout his academic career noting a commitment to the specialty of emergency medicine. Dr Burton completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992, and residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Affiliated Residency in Emergency Medicine in 1995.

Excellent

This book is an excellent reference for a timely topic. With procedural sedation fast becoming the standard of care and pain control an often overlooked issue in the emergency department, this work provides succinct and current information. I found the text thorough and informative and the illustrations quite useful. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve the quality of patient care with respect to pain management and procedural sedation.

Easy reading with consistent format for each topic

I liked this book as it was very easy reading. Each chapter/topic was short and to the point. We tried some of the ideas in this book in our PACU that were new to us, and met with success.

About the Author
Mark Srednicki is Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He gained his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1977, and received a PhD from Stanford University in 1980. Professor Srednicki has held postdoctoral positions at Princeton University and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Classroom Tested, Student Approved

I have been taught field theory from this text (actually, while it was in the process of being written), and then been a teaching assistant for the course in which it was used a second time.

In my experience, this is the best single text to use to learn field theory that one can buy today. It is completely modern in its presentation, and covers all of the fundamentals of field theory from scalars to spinors to gauge theory, and even has a significant amount of coverage of the standard model, specifically the Electro-weak theory. Additionally, the book is broken up into very short chapters of 4-10 pages each, and clearly cross referenced so you know what chapters are prerequisite knowledge.

There are a very large number of exercises which range in difficulty from very straightforward to very difficult. The problems manage to be educational and help deepen the understanding of what's presented in the text while still being a challenge.

This is an extremely well-rounded text. It is easily readable, and provides good intuition about the theory, but also goes far more in depth then the other "easier-to-read" field theory texts out there. It also generally sticks to the most commonly used notation and in situations where new notation is needed, the ones that are used are clear and well thought out. A solid graduate quantum mechanics background is necessary to get the most out of this test, but much of the more advanced math is covered as the book needs it (or reviewed in the exercises).

One down side to being so thorough on the theoretical framework is the lack of any reference to experiment or historical development of field theory. If your goal is to learn field theory only from the experimental side, there are better books out there. But for a solid grounding in the fundamentals of field theory there is no better place to start then this.

If only this book were available when I was in CalTech Phd program

I was at Caltech 1984-86 in Phd. theoretical physics program and they were still using Bjorken & Drell and then Ramond for the final quarter - I fell behind when we hit chapter 8 renormalization never caught up and to my regret dropped out and became a professional high limit poker player. Every few years I would buy another QFT text - I tried them all (Peskin & Schroeder, Ryder, kaku, Weinberg, Itzykson & Zuber, Hatfield, Zee)- learn a little but still never felt confortable with the subject. Then I discovered Prof. Srednicki's book on the internet and realized this is the book I have been waiting for. The subject is presented logically and coherently from a theorist point of view.

Renormalization, path integrals etc. are all treated from the beginning with a toy phi-cubed theory. What other field theory book actually shows you the double taylor expansion as in 9.11 page 60 and then clearly explains all the symmetry factors and numerical factors that lead to the final feynman diagrams.

The best part of the book is the problems - they are neither trivial nor research projects - so far I have worked almost every problem in part 1 (scalar fields)- and they are all instructive and doable. I particularly liked problem 10.5 on field redefinition - when you solve this one you know you understand the material on feynman diagrams and scattering amplitudes.

The treatment of scalar fields followed by spinor fields and then gauge fields enables one to learn the subject and gain confidence without overwhelming you with all the technical details and indices at once.

The only other book that compares with this one are Weinberg's which I would recommend tackling after Srednicki. I would also recommend Zee's nutshell book for those like myself who read QFT books for fun.

Excellent textbook

Srednicki's book provides a brilliantly organized exposition of the fundamental concepts and calculational tools of quantum field theory. The book is self-contained, and divided into many short chapters which makes it convenient to read. The writing style is very pedagogical, essentially avoiding the "black magic" and mystery that seem to be a necessary ingredient in many other QFT textbooks. The material is presented in a logical way, and the author makes sure to address all the necessary details. I won't be surprised if this new book soon becomes the leading book on the subject.

Biblical and neurologic correlates of mystical states

I am not done with this book and do not have time to write a detailed review at this point, but this is an incredible book, both from a biblical studies perspective and a neuropsychological one. The author is well versed in both fields, which is very rare. I am understanding aspects of the Pauline texts that I read very differently,and I better understand how some of the theological controversies that arose could be potentially resolvable. The necessary foundation for understanding of various neurological states is provided in the text for the reader without that background, including altered states of consciousness (ASCs)and their neurological correlates and the more intense states of "absolute unitary being" (AUB). Particular passages are analyzed in terms of evidence for these various subjective mental states. This is a very expensive book but for the student who is interested in the growing concept of neurotheology, it is an essential case study. If you have Kindle, it is $20 cheaper.

An examination of Paul's inner life.
By William S. Downer
Shantz attempts to examine "ecstatic elements in Paul's letters" (19) which means she is seeking to get at Paul's neurological responses via experiences ("an essential ingredient" 210) induced through spirit possession. The book claims to provide as well "cogent explanations for bewildering passages in Paul's letters." She in effect seeks to understand "how Paul came to know such things" (5,66) utilizing modern neuroscience which takes five chapters and 211 pages. But this is not just a neurological reading because she tells us that the aim of this study is to "add religious experiences as an impetus for communication and a source of its content" (209).

Shantz's first chapter assesses how people have misread Paul's religious experience. It is a "problem of seeing" (63). What she suggests is to lay aside that "impurity" of sort and dig down into what is really behind Paul's language (63-66). And although this overall study is very unique and investigative, her chapter 2 on "Paul's Brain: The Cognitive Neurology of Ecstasy" especially gets kodos for originality. Here she'll use/discuss such phraseology as "electrochemical phenomenon in the brain" (84); "temporal lobe activity" (87); "history of brain" (74); "model of neurological tuning" (81); and finally an examinatin of 2 Cor 12:1-4.

Paul's knowledge of the death of Christ is transformative because according to Shantz "the neurocognitive phenomena of ecstatic religious experience generate a sense of shared identity." An "imprinting of Paul's neural network," in other words, have occured. Thus when Paul writes his letters "by placing experience before discourse, the resulting exegesis explains some of the unusual features of Paul's thought-especially his so-called Christ-mysticism-more satisfactorily than traditional theological readings can" (143).

Her longest chapter 4 seeks to place "Paul's comments within a coherent sense of the social dynamics of this public practice" (145) by focusing especially on the Corinthian correspondence. She'll discuss "altered states of consciousness" (ASC) such as the experience of glossolalia occuring in Corinth; pneumatology; signs and wonders; ecstatic prayer and shamanism (though she does not believe Paul was a shaman).

Her final short chapter concludes by stressing that Paul's experience was one without language, "not verbal" but rather an expression of the "body" and as such when reading Paul one ought not to grasp his ideas "as ends in themselves" but rather as "inadequate and even misaligned substitutes for something that was more important to Paul" (207). Thus Paul's religious experiences needs to be heralded and rethought afresh in order to get behind what was really meaningful to him. This Shantz refers to as "blindsight" which is when the body knows "more than the text reveals" (210-211) and is therfore how we should be "reading" Paul.

This 267 page book includes a Bibliography of 39 pages; 6 pages of Ancient Sources; 9 pages of Index of Modern Authors; and Subject Index of 3 pages.

Finally for me Shantz' book, as her last few words state, was "a delight and a mystery" (211). I recommend it as an interesting read and I concur that this study is unique and a needed addition to current theological hermeneutical interpretation of Paul. I thought it was interesting how she explained Paul's "neurological storms centered in the temporal lobe" (151) but a mystery in that large segments of it I deemed unhelpful. Readers of Paul have always attempted to get behind his aims and ideas. There is nothing new about that. How can "blindsight" ever be helpful except in realizing one is blind and can only guess at what really was behind Paul's thoughts?

Thankfully for 2000 years the Holy Spirit has been helping the church interpret Paul!

About the Author
Originally from Paris, France, Dr Geschwind pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania before receiving his medical degree in 1991 from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency training at the University of California, San Francisco and trained in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at Johns Hopkins, where he became a faculty member in 1998. In 2002, Dr. Geschwind was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and appointed Director of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. He is the author or co-author of over 200 published manuscripts and abstracts primarily on subjects dealing with cardiac MRI and oncology, and he is also the recipient of numerous national and international awards and grants for his research in the field of liver cancer. Dr Geschwind is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR), Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and the World Journal of Gastroenterology and a reviewer for numerous radiology and oncology journals. He is a member of the Hepatobiliary Task Force of the National Cancer Institute and has been a Board Member of the Society of Interventional Radiology Research Foundation since 2006. Dr Geschwind is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Liver Cancer Association, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiology Society of North America, the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Society of Europe.

Dr Soulen received his BS from Yale and MD from the University of Pennsylvania, then trained in radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. After clinical and research fellowships in vascular and interventional radiology at Thomas Jefferson University, he started the interventional oncology program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently Professor of Radiology and Surgery. Dr Soulen has 140 publications with over 1,500 ISI citations and has given over 100 presentations around the world. He served on the board of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) for 9 years and currently serves as Director of Research Education for the SIR Foundation. He is a Fellow of the SIR and of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE).

About the Author
Joseph P. Joyce is a Professor of Economics at Wellesley College and serves as the faculty director of the Madeleine Korbel Institute for Global Affairs. Professor Joyce's research deals with issues in financial globalization, and he has published articles in many journals, including the Journal of International Money and Finance, the Open Economies Review, the Review of International Economics, the Journal of Development Economics and Economics and Politics. He is a member of the editorial board of the Review of International Organizations. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Boston University.

No-Nonsense Guide to the IMF

Joyce presents an overview of the IMF's mission, history, and functions while also providing a critical analysis of the Fund. At the same time, he offers a parallel history of financial crises since WWII that draws on a variety of theoretical perspectives in order to get it right. The biggest asset of the book is the book's accessibility. There is no other book that provides a clear and concise overview of these issues. It is perfect for undergraduate courses in international economics and international economic relations. It is also a perfect introduction for graduate students and policy-makers attempting to get up to speed on how the world economy works (and doesn't) and how global economic governance is supposed to work (and doesn't). The perfect entree for people wanting to engage in one of the most important tasks of our time--preventing and mitigating the next financial crisis.

Basically an IMF mantra in support of a global fiat accounting unit. If you like boring techno-prose, a great book, otherwise don't expect to see any real criticism of corruption within such organizations, or how they are used as a weapon for Imperial geopolitical agendas.

Gregory H. Fox is Associate Professor of Law (tenured) at Wayne State University Law School, where he is the Inaugural Cohn Family Scholar in Legal History.
