His book takes the student reader on a journey from Africa through Europe, North and South America, the Caribbean, and back to Africa, as he explores the challenges posed to our understanding of knowledge and freedom today, and the response to them which can be found within Africana philosophy.

Not an introdution to philosophy or Africana

Just a word to potential readers: if you intend on reading this book you should have a firm base of understanding in philosophical thought, concepts and philosophers. Additionally you should be well read in a core group of African American/Africana authors. Having command of one and not both makes for a challenging read(this is close to how I would describe myself, although one may argue full understanding of one implies some understanding of the other(which is what I was trying to gain)). Never-the-less I was able to gain some insight into the previous readings I had done and I appreciated the authors bringing to light the inherent racism of historical and indeed current philosophy. I think if I had been aware I would have waited to purchase this book until I had taken a few more philosophy courses and had a broader understanding under my belt, none of which i say to imply this is a bad book, in fact I'm probably a poor judge, which is exactly my point -this isn't an "Introduction".

About the Author
Mehran Kardar is Professor of Physics at MIT, where he has taught and researched in the field of Statistical Physics for the past twenty years. He received his BA in Cambridge, and gained his PhD at MIT. Professor Kardar has held research and visiting positions as a junior fellow at Harvard, a Guggenheim fellow at Oxford, UCSB, and at Berkeley as a Miller Fellow.

Excellent Text

Perhaps I am a bit biased as I took Mehran Kardar's statistical mechanics class, but this is the best graduate-level statistical mechanics textbook I have looked at (including Pathria, Huang, and Landau). In the tradition of Landau's excellent mechanics textbook, Kardar is a master of statistical physics who starts with only basic assumptions about the nature of the physical laws in each chapter, and derives wonderful results elucidating the nature of statistical physics. The meat of the textbook is less than 200 pages and includes all of the basic results of thermodynamics, a section on probability, an introduction to kinetic theory, and the bulk of classical and quantum statistical mechanics; brevity is the soul of wit, as they say. A few areas could have used a little more elaboration (the derivation of the Boltzmann equation seemed to skip a few important steps in implementing the streaming collision terms, and a better explanation for the basics of diagrammatical techniques would have been nice), but none of the other books I have looked at even broached these topics in any depth. Unlike Landau's excellent statistical physics book, very little assumed knowledge is required to follow this textbook; obviously, skill in elementary algebra, calculus, differential equations, and a bit of Hamiltonian mechanics and a few very basic results of quantum mechanics are prerequisites. Recommended!

The real story

Ok, most of the reviews about this book are positive here. But some of them are precisely from Kardar students. And when I talk with my classmates (of a renowned physics grad school), we all agree that we do not like the book, so it seems weird that this book has so many positive reviews. The book is a good book in the sense that it covers many modern techniques, with a modern approach. However the most important fact about it is that it resembles more a set of class notes than a comprehensive book. It is way to concise to really explain what is happening, and some parts are just pulled out of a magicians hat. Some of its explanations leave the student with a religious perspective about the topic: "I did not really understand how this works, but I'm sure the holy spirit will make it work".

It barely has examples to explain some complex ideas. Chapter 3 is obscure, although it does point out some very important details that no other book points. Chapter 5 should be given much more attention, to explain in detail and with more examples some of the ideas. Some parts of it are just very hard to understand. Probably if one attends to Kardar lectures and uses his book, the combination is great, but for self study this book is not good at all.

There is people that praise that this book is concise, so it is good. I tell them, a book should not necessarily be concise. A book should be a reference that one can go back to, and as such, it should cover in detail all the topics that it covers. A book is not a set of class notes.

Good Modern Treatment

I used both this text and Pathria for a graduate level class in statistical mechanics. Kardar's treatment is very modern and has a wonderful perspective. However, it is very mathematical while managing to not be very thorough. The problems were very good and the worked solutions in the back were quite helpful. For the material covered in this book, I preferred Pathria, which was in general far more thorough.

Coordinating the Allied Armies on the Western Front

Marshal Foch once commented during World War I that since August 1914 he had lost much of the respect that he had once had for Napoleon. Foch reflected that all the Emperor's victories were achieved when fighting coalitions and since Foch had worked closely with the British almost from the opening campaign, he now knew what that meant. Elizabeth Greenhalgh, a professor at the Australian Defence University and co-editor of the highly regarded journal War and Society, has produced an essential study of the key military relationship on the Western Front from 1914 to 1918--that between Britain and France. In her story, the Russians are an unseen presence just off stage while the Italians and Americans have small speaking parts toward the end. Deeply researched in French, British, and Australian archives, the book provides both a succinct description of the personalities and machinery of liaison between the Allied armies and the high politics of coalition diplomacy and the very senior people, politicians and soldiers, who practiced it. Interestingly, the French leaders, Clemenceau, Joffre, and Foch, appear very much to advantage to their British counterparts Lloyd George and Haig, who Greenhalgh catches doctoring his diary after the war to make himself look better. Petain, however, is almost as parochial as Haig, but then their positions as commanders of their respective national armies in the field almost guaranteed that they would adopt a narrow view of things. Among the senior British commanders, Plumer was perhaps the most adept at working with the French with minimal friction. It is at the level of liaison that the British are most competent, and the French for the greater part of the war were ill-served. This is a volume that any student of World War I will want to read and ponder. It is also one that students of World War II will want to consider, particularly the author's discussion of how Foch organized his headquarters once he became the Allied coordinator in 1918. It became both a model (for MacArthur in the Southwest Pacific Area) and a starting point for something rather different in Europe. In addition to everything else, the author writes very well--but then you would expect no less from an editor. Highly recommended.

Lessons gleaned from this book

I learned 4 things from this book:

1. I think I agree with Marshal Foch who said he lost some respect for Napoleon's reputation because he mostly coalitions.
2. My respect and admiration for Dwight Eisenhower as a administrator and manager as Supreme Allied Commander during World War II has increased greatly
3. How in the world did the Germans lose to these guys? British and French High Command at best tolerated each other and sometimes downright loathed each other.
4. Oh yea, it was because the technicians and bureaucrats knew how to work together and successfully pool and distribute resources. And in this war materials and supplies wins wars.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in not only the Great War but to anybody interested in seeing how coalitions try to work and the troubles of trying to get the government and military to think in Allied terms and not in their own self interest

A fresh approach to Fitzgerald

I would never have thought that someone could still write a fresh approach to Fitzgerald, especially in an introductory book. However, Curnutt has done just that here. I read this book with both wonder and admiration at how Curnutt has reformulated the old critical approaches into something fresh and new, without having the whole thing weighted down by theoretical baggage. I recommend this book to experienced and novice readers of Fitzgerald alike.
