Calvin H. Johnson is the Andrews and Kurth Centennial Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College (Philosophy) and his law degree from Stanford. Before entering teaching, he was a tax lawyer with Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton and Garrison in New York and with the US Treasury Department.

Roger Bagnall is Professor of Ancient History at New York University and Director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. He is an internationally acknowledged leader in the field of papyrology and his publications include Egypt in Late Antiquity (1993), The Demography of Roman Egypt (1994, with Bruce Frier) and Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History (1995). He is also editor of the Oxford Handbook of Papyrology (2009).

This is an admirable compendium of Byzantine Egypt history, offering a lucid and rational analysis of topics on its society, culture, religious life, art and economy, during the 4th to the 7th CE. The essays portray Egypt within its mediaeval Mediterranean world to the emergence of its Coptic identity, as a distinctive tradition of literary and religious culture.

The distinguished scholarly contributors represent two generation of Coptologists who established their expertise with the Chenoboskion Coptic Gnostic Library, Nag-Hamady, led by Stephen Emmel and James Goehring. Within the second generation are few amazing experts in various facets of the Copto-Byzantine Culture, Environment/ society, and Church/ Monasticism.

Roger Bagnall expertise in early Christian Egypt is refreshing as his introduction, that takes the reader across four centuries of an era that covered long struggles over doctrine and ecclesiastic power in Byzantium. He wrote an informing brief review, without overlooking the megalopolice of Alexandria. Its role over Mediterranean cities, and heroic defense Athanasius, Cyril's theology, by or John Philoponus achievements.

Alan Cameron starts Part I on culture, with 'Poets and Pagans', refreshing the memory of some Coptic celebrities in Nonnus, while he takes the analysis of a massive collection on a lonely but beautiful subject. He observes that, "The mere fact that we can name actually so many, has often been thought to imply an organized pagan opposition." He adds, "The fact that they were an outlawed minority, in a Christian world, no doubt created certain solidarity."

In "Philosophy in its social content," Leslie MacCoull calls on two Aristotle commentators, Simplicus and the 'Miaphysite John Philoponus' writing, "Philosophy was not just a curriculum but an enacted way of life." She argues particularly for Philoponus. Her usage of theological terms proves her category, as she explores his writings, "Three-act drama" of his break with Aristotle,'De anima', in defense contra Chalcedon, and 'De Opificio Mundi'.

Coptic Architecture, a favorite subject of mine, is articulated by Peter Grossmann, to my joy, as he links late antiquety Egypt to the Fifth century great basilica of St. Menas. He writes, "Throughout Egypt, the predominant church type was three or five aisled basillica with the main axis pointing east-west. An apse was positioned at the narrow east end, flanked in both sides, by at least two sides chambers (pastophoria)," in addition to many church plot plans (blue prints).

In his account of a theatrical and linguistic experiment, Crystal, author of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, makes the story of a Globe Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet using Early Modern English both breezy and academically enthralling. For the 2004 production, the first in fifty years to employ language and pronunciation from Shakespeare's era, Crystal prepared the play's text and taught the cast how to speak as Shakespeare's original players are thought to have spoken. Crystal explains how he used Elizabethan spellings and clues within the script (line meter, rhyming schemes and sound patterns) to determine how words sounded in the sixteenth century, a question that vexed him throughout the play's production. Despite his dazzling linguistics accomplishments, Crystal writes in a down-to-earth manner, discussing his field and the production with a dry wit and true enthusiasm. American readers may have problems following the discussion of British regional accents, and, as with all theater books, the best writing cannot make up for the reader's inability to see (and, particularly in this case, hear) the production. However, as a brief study of an intriguing experiment, this title will be as welcome to the theatrical and linguistic worlds as Crystal's earlier works.

Only concise available description of reconstructed Early Modern English pronunciation

The title of my review states clearly what I was looking for in this book, and what I had found difficult to extract from the standard scholarly works of Kökeritz, Dobson, and Cercignani. I award this book four stars because it (and it alone, as far as I know) contains (buried in its chatty commentary about the weather, how the author doesn't get nervous before giving lectures, etc.) this simple desideratum. If you've ever felt frustrated that you couldn't find the 2-5 pp. account for Shakespeare equivalent to such easy-to-find information (on a basic level) as "How to pronounce Chaucer" or "The sounds of Italian," this book is a decent remedy. It would have been better (both for usefulness and book sales) for Crystal & Cambridge to have brought out, instead of this diffuse and incomplete large-font-with-lots-of-white-space-between-the-lines book, an even slenderer (but far more detailed and thorough) volume entitled "Shakespeare's Original Pronunciation: A Practical Guide, With Transcriptions." (Perhaps Crystal, because he is not an expert, was too modest to go this route, but the experts have conspicuously failed to provide this for teachers, readers, and actors.) If you want the meat of the reconstruction, actual phonetic information is contained only on pp. 13, 37-41, 47-54, 60-92, 115, 175-181 (and could have been distilled into a five-page handout). The rest of the book will mainly interest theater people who want additional behind-the-scenes commentary on how the production happened (dealing with actors' personalities, what the audience thought, etc.).

Pleasant reading, but not more chatty than scientific

I have enjoyed all of David Crystal's books that I have read. He is an excellent linguist, whom I greatly admire for his ability to communicate effectively to a wide audience of varying linguistic experiences. However, this book is a simple narrative description of a project, not much more than a diary. The linguistic impact of this issue would accommodate one article in some journal, certainly not a whole book. If linguistics is your interest, choose another book.

About the Author
Philip Sabin is Professor of Strategic Studies in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. His main academic interest concerns the analytical modelling of conflict, and he is the author of Lost Battles: Reconstructing the Great Clashes of the Ancient World (2007) and co-editor (with Tim Cornell and Boris Rankov) of The Second Punic War: A Reappraisal (1996). He teaches and writes about the strategy and tactics of warfare from ancient times to the twenty-first century.

Hans Van Wees is Professor of Ancient History at University College London. He is the author of Status Warriors: War, Violence and Society in Homer and History (1992) and Greek Warfare: Myths and Realities (2004) and editor of War and Violence in Ancient Greece (2000). He has co-edited (with Nick Fisher) Archaic Greece: New Approaches and New Evidence (1998), (with Egbert Bakker and Irene de Jong) Brill's Companion to Herodotus (2002) and (with Kurt Raaflaub) A Companion to Archaic Greece (forthcoming).

Michael Whitby is Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick. He is the co-editor of Volume XIV of The Cambridge Ancient History (2001) and author of Rome at War, AD 293-696 (2002) as well as several articles on late Roman warfare, and has made several television appearances talking about ancient warfare from the Graeco-Persian Wars to the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Transatlantic Encounters examines the diverse origins and experiences of approximately 175 American Indians and Inuits who traveled to the British Isles before the American Revolution. Some American natives died soon after arrival, but others remained as long as fourteen years and returned home; still others, their arrival and death dates undocumented, may have endured long lives abroad. And always, Indians and Inuits fascinated the British people, whether the Americans were captives or on commercial display, interpreters-in-training, or voluntary voyagers to petition the monarch and tour Britain's famous sites. British artists painted their portraits and eminent writers invoked them in plays and essays. In the imperial crisis of 1776, Indian diplomats who had been to London would staunchly support the British Empire.

Alden T. Vaughan is Affiliate Professor of History at Clark University and Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University, where he taught for several decades. He is the author of many books, including Shakespeare's Caliban: A Cultural History (1991), with his wife, Virginia Mason Vaughan.

This book does not set out to trailblaze but to add to the.paucity of available studies on this topic. It uses very limited sources and fails to take account pf the vast work done in American First Nations political landscape and the construction of race by the Rnglisg in the period studied. Though entertainingly written, it would suit a generalist and/or novice in the subject area.

This book had the information I was seeking about the history of the nearby Indian experiences during the three failed colonies of the English in 1580s. The whole book was well written and an interesting read. I recommend this book to anyone who desires to understand this period of time and the hardships for both the settlers and the natives.

About the Author
Cleo Kearns is a teacher, scholar and writing coach based in Vermont and New York. A graduate of Smith College (BA) and Columbia University (PhD) she is the author of this book and T. S. Eliot and Indic Traditions, both published by Cambridge University Press. She edits and reviews for a number of journals in the fields of cultural studies and comparative religion, and has taught composition, literature, literary theory and philosophy at the college and graduate levels at (among others) New York University, Rutgers University and Princeton Theological Seminary.

It is also shown how in principle this theory can be used to develop verification techniques for guaranteeing the behavior of distributed agents. The text is accessible to computer scientists with a minimal background in discrete mathematics. It contains an elementary account of the pi-calculus, and the associated theory of bisimulations. It also develops the type theory required by Dpi from first principles.
