About the Author
Paul Fouracre is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Manchester. His previous publications include Property and Power in the Early Middle Ages (co-edited with Wendy Davies, Cambridge, 1995) and The Age of Charles Martel (2000). He is co-editor of Early Medieval Europe and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Rosamond McKitterick holds the Chair in Medieval History in the University of Cambridge and is Vice-Master of Sidney Sussex College. Her books include The Carolingians and the Written Word (1989), History and Memory in the Carolingian World (2004), Perceptions of the Past in the Early Middle Ages (2006), Charlemagne: The Formation of a European Identity (2008) and Old Saint Peter's, Rome (edited with J. Osborne, C. Richardson and J. Story, 2013), and she has lectured and given seminars in many universities in Britain, Continental Europe, North America and Australia. She is a Corresponding Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and in 2010 she was awarded the Dr A. H. Heineken International Prize for History. Her current work within the field of the early medieval history of Europe focuses on a people's (re)construction, knowledge and use of the past, especially the Roman past. Latterly this has also taken her into study of the historical and cultural context and implications of early medieval glossaries.

Christopher Allmand is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at the University of Liverpool. He has published widely on the history of war and medieval society, including The Hundred Years War: England and France at War c.1300 c.1450 (Cambridge University Press, 1988) and The New Cambridge Medieval History, Volume 7: c.1415 c.1500 (as editor, Cambridge University Press, 1998).

Jonathan Shepard was for many years a Lecturer in History at the University of Cambridge, and was a Fellow of Selwyn College and of Peterhouse. He is the co-editor (with Simon Franklin) of Byzantine Diplomacy (1992), co-author (also with Simon Franklin) of The Emergence of Rus, 750-1200 (1996), author of Nespokoyni s'sedi: b'lgaro-vizantiyska konfrontatsiya, obmen i s'zhitelstvo prez srednite vekove [Uneasy neighbours: Bulgaro-Byzantine confrontation, exchange and co-existence in the Middle Ages] (2007) and editor of The Expansion of Orthodox Europe: Byzantium, the Balkans and Russia (2007). Peter Linehan is Fellow and Tutor of St. John's College, Cambridge. He is the author of, most recently, History and the Historians of Medieval Spain (1993).

Spufford was until 2001 Professor of European History, University of Cambridge.

Very heady reading

My wife asked for this series of books as a wish list type of item. When she's in the mood to be studious, this is the kind of thing she likes to read to intellectually entertain herself. It is challenging enough that she has to do additional research while she is reading.
