Facing the Gods: Epiphany and Representation in Graeco-Roman Art, Literature and Religion (Greek Culture in the Roman World), by Professor

This is the first history of epiphany as both a phenomenon and as a cultural discourse within the Graeco-Roman world, exploring divine manifestations and their representations, in visual terms as well as in literary, historical and epigraphic accounts. Verity Platt sets the cultural analysis of epiphany within a historical framework that explores its development from the archaic period into the Roman empire. In particular, a surprisingly large number of the images that have survived from antiquity are not only religious, but epiphanically charged. Verity Platt argues that the enduring potential for divine incursions into mortal experience provides a structure of cognitive reliability that supports both ancient religion and mythology. At the same time, Graeco-Roman culture exhibits a sophisticated awareness of the difficulties of the apprehension of deity, the representation of divine presence, and the potential for the manmade sign to lead the worshipper back to an unmediated epiphanic encounter.

Review
"Original and important."
The Times Literary Supplement

"... a stimulating, wide-ranging work that that should be of interest to all those studying the classical world; it will certainly become standard reading for anyone with an interest in Greek religion, Greek and Roman iconography, or the literary and philosophical discourses of the Second Sophistic. Elegantly written and argued."

Poorly manufactured book sold at an exorbitant price
By Ipsaruinadocet
Although the book looks as and costs the price of a hardcover, it lacks all the features which would make it more durable and solid than a cheap mass-market paperback. The text-block is not tightly attached to the cover, but, due to its weight, hanging loose and almost fell out of the cover before I even opened the book. The pages are neither thread-stitched nor arranged in signatures (what you would expect for the price you pay); they are just glued in the most simple way at the spine, apparently by using a cheap thermal adhesive glue (such as photocopy shops use it to bind documents), with the typical result that the glue did not penetrate the pages at the spine: when you open the pages flat, the pages just fall out of the binding. If you buy this book with the intention to read it (as I did), you can throw it away after you have read it once: you will hold in your hands just a pile of loose sheets having dropped out of the book. And although the book is sold (and advertised) as the first edition of 2011, it is in fact (as stated on the copyright page) a reprint from 2012 showing the typical markers of a cheap reproduction (after a PDF?) of the original edition: smudges, hazing, "clouds", streaks, and lack of contrast in many if not most of the illustrations. And for all this you pay the incredible price of $135 - this is predatory exploitation, not selling books to readers.

Good Text Book Buy
By Leslie M.
I bought this book as a textbook/research book for my daughter studying her PhD in Classics. It was a request as a gift. She wanted this book for her professional collection.
