Mechanical Behavior of Materials, by Marc André Meyers, Krishan Kumar Chawla

A balanced mechanics-materials approach and coverage of the latest developments in biomaterials and electronic materials, the new edition of this popular text is the most thorough and modern book available for upper-level undergraduate courses on the mechanical behavior of materials. To ensure that the student gains a thorough understanding the authors present the fundamental mechanisms that operate at micro- and nano-meter level across a wide-range of materials, in a way that is mathematically simple and requires no extensive knowledge of materials. This integrated approach provides a conceptual presentation that shows how the microstructure of a material controls its mechanical behavior, and this is reinforced through extensive use of micrographs and illustrations. New worked examples and exercises help the student test their understanding. Further resources for this title, including lecture slides of select illustrations and solutions for exercises, are available online at www.cambridge.org/97800521866758.

Review
"I would certainly recommend this book to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students studying mechanical behavior of materials in Schools of Engineering or Solid State Physics. The book would be an excellent resource for a faculty staff to deliver a course on this topic"
Materials Today, March 2009

From the Back Cover
Provides comprehensive treatment of the mechanical behavior of materials within a balanced mechanics-materials approach. Covering a range of materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites, this book presents the properties of materials while addressing the principal ideas behind theories of mechanical behavior. It includes broad treatment of flow and fracture criteria. It presents various mechanisms for tailoring the strength and toughness of materials. It also provides references and a list of suggested readings in each chapter. A valuable reference book on the mechanical behavior of materials for all practicing Mechanical and Materials Engineers.

Not good for Undergrad, Maybe Okay for Graduate
By Matthew Bockman
I had this book for MAE160 at UCSD. This book isn't good for undergrad because the material is so scattered. Since it's graduate and undergraduate level, you will not cover a lot of things in undergrad classes, which makes it not clear what to cover. Also, no answers or solutions to the provided problems, which make it difficult to verify that you're doing it correctly. Overall I really dislike the book, but can see that it'd be useful if you read it FRONT TO BACK and really combed through the material. It's written more like a series of research papers then like a nice Prentice-Hall textbook.

This textbook should never have made it past the editors.

The text is completely riddled through with errors--grammar errors, errors in arithmetic, and errors in derivations.

If it were just errors, and if some compilation of errata were published, the textbook would be more tolerable. However, many more grievous problems plague the whole of the text, rendering it entirely useless, especially for the undergraduate target audience.

On more than one occasion, the authors have launched into derivations of critical equations using completely unexplained variables; on more than one occasion, the authors refer to tables or figures that don't show up in the text for another few pages. Some figures are entirely unexplained, even though their complexity is far beyond the scope of an undergrad's comprehension.

The worst part of the book, however, and the one that affects students the most, is that the homework problems at the end of each chapter are needlessly difficult to solve and use. A list of grievances:

1. The problems are not ordered in any conceivable fashion. Problem number 1 can come from midway through the chapter, while problem 2 can come from the very end of the chapter. Problem 3 can be an easy, one-line answer, whereas problem 4 can be a graduate-level derivation. With no discernible order in the practice problems, studying using this book is incredibly difficult.

2. A large number of the problems do not have enough information to solve the problem. Somehow, the student is expected to pore through material property tables--not included in the textbook, mind you--to finish some questions. And a large number of the problems aren't even discussed in the book, whether in the text itself or in the examples. To the normal undergraduate student, these problems are simply impossible.

3. For the problems that do have matching examples in the body of the text, the examples are often trivial and easy, while the homework problems are vastly more complex. There's no point in including examples if they're not helpful enough to elucidate the problems the student is going to be given.

4. Finally, there are no solutions provided in the book for any of the problems, whereas many other textbooks would provide answers to the odd-numbered problems. For a student, this can be highly discouraging--there's no way to verify if you're doing the problem correctly. It seems to be a massive oversight or a huge manifestation of the authors' laziness that not a single answer is provided, given the relative difficulty of the problems in this book.

Final verdict:

While the book is comprehensive--very comprehensive--book is unreadable. It is dry. It is unhelpful. The practice problems provided are nigh impossible.

To students: I recommend getting a different textbook to supplement your studies, as this book will be of no help to you.

To professors: Do not use this textbook, as it will simply cause vexation in your students while teaching nothing. The practice problems provided are also not useful to you.

To the publishers: This book needs far more editor attention than it has been given. The proliferation of errors on every other page belies a lack of effort or a lack of editors suited to work on scientific texts.

To the authors: Try harder to make this book understandable and useful at all, because as it stands, the book is entirely unhelpful.

Adequate
By mme_egr
So its a text book. Since its materials it is full of empirical equations. However, it doesn't need to be this boring. There are basically two types of text books. Ones that are meant to impart information to you, and this type which are very hard to understand because the author feels that his/her subject should be above most levels of understanding. I think its worth buying because its cheap and has tons of info, but it's written like someone didn't want to put the work into making it interesting.
