About the Author
I. R. Walker is a researcher at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, where he has worked for over 20 years. He received his Ph.D. there in 1992, and was an Assistant Director of Research from 1995 to 2002. His principle line of research is the physics of superconductors and other strongly correlated electron materials at ultra-low temperatures, and the development of techniques for subjecting these materials to high pressures under such conditions.

Recommended to all working in science and engineering

It is fantastic to see decades of first-hand experience working in experimental science passed on in this clearly presented, comprehensive and well researched book. I have recently used this with graduate students working in a physics research lab. They found it very useful when designing new apparatus and I'm sure it saved a great deal of time in avoiding false-starts. This long awaited book goes beyond many other texts typically found on experimental techniques, not only describing principles of operation, but explaining in detail how to design and build reliable apparatus and putting very much a human front on the experimental process. I would recommend this book to beginners as well as experienced scientists and engineers. It may be used as a teaching guide or as a reference to aid the daily problems encountered in the running of a lab in the university or industrial setting.
