About the Author
Thomas Andrew Green is the John P. Dawson Collegiate Professor of Law emeritus and Professor of History emeritus at the University of Michigan. He served as editor or coeditor of Studies in Legal History, the book series of the American Society for Legal History, from 1986 to 2011. Green has also served as president of the American Society for Legal History, has been a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, and has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. One of his previous publications, Verdict According to Conscience: Perspectives on the English Criminal Trial Jury, 1200-1800 (1985), and the present volume together form the framework of his current project, a study of the relationship between ideas about the jury and ideas about criminal responsibility in the English and American past. That project will complete Green's work on two aspects of freedom in Anglo-American criminal justice history: political liberty and free will.

About the Author
Charles Parker is Professor of History at St Louis University. He has published extensively on the religious and cultural history of early modern Europe, with a focus on the Low Countries. His books include Faith on the Margins: Catholics and Catholicism in the Dutch Golden Age (2008), The Reformation of Community: Social Welfare and Calvinist Charity in Holland, 1572-1620 (2006), and a co-edited volume, From the Middle Ages to Modernity: Individual and Community in the Early Modern World (2008). His articles and essays have appeared in the Journal of World History, The Sixteenth Century Journal, The Journal of Ecclesiastical History, the Journal of Religious History, and the Journal of Early Modern History.

By comparing the approaches of these men, who were living and working in Antioch at approximately the same time, she strives to get inside the process of religious interaction in a way not normally possible due to the dominance of Christian sources. In so doing she develops approaches to the study of Libanius' religion, the impact of John Chrysostom's preaching on his audiences and the importance of religious identity to fourth-century individuals.

Alain Barrat is Senior Researcher at the Centre de Physique Théorique (CNRS and Aix-Marseille University, France) and at the Institute for Scientific Interchange in Turin, Italy. His research interests are in the field of out-of-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

A Definitive Work

A clearly written, authoritative account of the mechanisms acting on complex networks, this book is indispensable to social scientists, physicists, web researchers, and biologists alike. The text is well-organized and provides a structured, rigorous introduction to network science in the first three chapters and continues into the theory of dynamical processes, phase transitions, robustness, synchronization phenomena, random walks, epidemic spreading and diffusion processes, opinion formation in social networks, traffic modeling and systems biology. Chapters begin with a strong case for the importance of each particular topic, and move quickly into lucid mathematical accounts of the respective processes and their statistical properties. Chapters frequently conclude with a philosophical bookend that outlines theoretical implications and future directions for the field. Another strength of this work is that it is structured in such a way that chapters can be utilized individually, each one acting a complete, comprehensive unit of knowledge.

This book is a definitive guide to understanding a wide range of dynamical processes on networks, and it's rigor and scope afford the reader a high degree of confidence in the material. The only caveat I might offer is that the text is technically dense, thoroughly covering a broad swath of science in just over 300 pages. The reader is presented with everything required to understand the concepts covered in each chapter, but I often found myself re-reading passages in order to fully understand the arguments and implications of the text. This aside, rest assured that the studious reader will find this to be a rewarding, thoughtful account of an important field of science, and I would strongly recommend this book to anyone whose work involves network analysis.

A great book on dynamical processes on networks

The new frontier of interdisciplinary research is the science of complex
networks, that provides the right mathematical framework to investigate the
statistical properties of many complex systems belonging to different fields
of study, from biology to economics, engineering and social sciences.

Several good books on complex networks have been recently published, but the
present one is the first focusing on the dynamical aspects of processes
taking place on networks.
Navigation and search on networks, traffic models, epidemic and rumors spreading,
synchronization phenomena, aggregation of information and consensus ...
these are examples of the kind of collective dynamics modern sciences are
interested in!!
This book provides a unique account of these topics, that combines a rigorous
scientific exposition with a very pedagogical attitude, and
continual connections to real-world systems.

Clearly written by leading researchers in the field, the book is intended to
the very broad audience of complex network scientists.
In my opinion, it is a compelling reading for students approaching this
research field and a perfect reference book for courses both at
undergraduate and PhD level.

Keith Stowe is the Professor of Physics at California Polytechnic State University, and has worked there for 32 years. He has spent time at the University of Washington, Harvard University, the University of North Carolina and the University of Michigan. As well as the first edition of Introduction to Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics he has written books on ocean science.

A Great Text

One could be pardoned for thinking that thermodynamics ought to be easy: energy is conserved and that's that. However, generations of physics and chemistry students know that the subject is one complication after another. This textbook is a splendid example of clarity and comprehensiveness. Synoptic through and through, it sets the formulas and equations of classical thermodynamics side by side so that the reader can grasp their interrelations rather than just isolated snippets applicable to special cases and depending on arbitrary assumptions. The book is organized in a logical fashion, yet the different parts can be studied independently. (What is standardly called the "zeroth law" is introduced rather late.) Pedagogically, the book is a model of sound practice: there are extremely clear summaries strategically located within chapters, and there are abundant well-designed problems. Combining both classical and quantum approaches in a rigorous yet not too forbidding way, this book covers it all.

Poorly put together, difficult to follow

I am a student currently enrolled in a thermodynamics course in undergrad, and I tend to rely heavily on my textbooks. Some are great, some are not so great, but manageable. This is the only textbook I've ever had that I find almost useless. Navigating through the chapters and pages is a complete nightmare, very simple concepts that should be included in ever textbook, such as the current chapter on the top of the page, and an easy access table of commonly used terms and constants is completely left out. This forces me to have to use the internet, since it would simply take me to long to find what I am looking for in this text.

The text is alright, for the most part it is easy to follow and get the gist of what it is trying to say, but actually understanding rather than memorizing is quite hard to do. I find that examples are the best way to easily show a student, and a great way for a student to analyse what is actually going on. The lack of examples in the book is completely astonishing. It makes it very difficult to understand the concepts, rather than memorize them. Understanding is what needs to be happening in a science textbook, not memorizing.

The Index...don't get me started on the index. Awful. I dont even know what to say, the number of times there are just blatant ideas missing from the index (Again making navigation of the text near impossible).

What I am saying is that I would avoid this book, unless you just want to memorize thermodynamics, rather than understand it, and if you have too much spare time that you want to spend hours of it attempting to find the topic you want somewhere in the maze that is this book. There has got to be a better one out there.

clear and to the point

After a couple of years of looking around, I'm pretty much convinced this is the best introductory text on statistical mechanics. It assumes you know nothing and motivates every concept. I'd recommend this to any undergraduate, even if you are using another text. To a professor, on its own the text has enough material for a one semester course, but not year long. One notable deficiency in the text is a lack of diversity in homework problems -- the difficulty is consistently too low, so the instructor will need to supplement additional problems.

About the Author
Coral Ann Howells is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies at the University of London. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Reading, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Eva-Marie Kröller is Professor in the Department of English at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and served as editor-in-chief of Canadian Literature from 1995 to 2003.
