Review
"...Overall, the content of the book is useful and well laid out. Each section is introduced clearly, followed by graded content and then concluded with both suggested readings and discussion questions. The flow of chapters in the book is excellent. Each new chapter follows from previous discussions and is introduced with the chapter's aims. The language used is pitched at a level which is suitable for undergraduate students. In fact, the introductory text is simple enough for a reader with no previous knowledge in this area, making it ideal for undergraduate teaching."
--Shanya Pillay, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, South African Journal of Industrial Psychology

From the Back Cover
Unique in both perspective and approach, this book exposes readers to the entire panorama of psychological testing — covering all major classic and contemporary topics — but without overwhelming detail. Comprehensive — but not encyclopedic — and cross-culturally relevant, it conveys in exceptionally clear language the excitement associated with psychological testing, and teaches basic principles through concrete interconnected examples. Focusing on “testing the individual” rather than on testing in general and specific formulas, it is both academic and applied in perspective — reflecting the author's varied experience in industry, in a counseling center, and in other service oriented settings, and extensive academic training in clinical psychology. Addresses basic issues regarding The Nature of Tests; Test Construction, Administration, and Interpretation; and Reliability and Validity. Considers the various dimensions of testing: Personality; Cognition; Attitudes, Values, and Interests; Psychopathology; Normal Positive Functioning. Details the applications of testing with a variety of populations: Special Children; The Elderly; Testing in a Cross-Cultural Context; Disability and Rehabilitation. Discusses the various settings of testing: Testing in the Schools; Occupational Settings; and Clinical and Forensic Settings. Presents the current challenges to testing: The Issue of Faking; The Role of Computers; and Testing Behavior and Environments. Outlines the History of Testing. For anyone interested in psychological testing in a broad range of settings.

Do not buy kindle edition if you don't own a kindle
By Heather
The textbook is dry reading but I didn't give it three stars for that reason. I got the kindle edition and I read it on my kindle app on my iPad mini. There are no page numbers and the sections don't expand out so if my professor says to read chapters 9 & 13 I am literally flipping through hundreds of pages to find where I need to be. If you buy this book either rent it or buy it outright but don't buy it for kindle. True it will save you some money but the extra money is worth the saving me the hassle of searching for chapters.

A Short Introduction to Quantum Information and Quantum Computation, by Michel Le Bellac

Quantum information and computation is a rapidly expanding and cross-disciplinary subject. This book, first published in 2006, gives a self-contained introduction to the field for physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists who want to know more about this exciting subject. After a step-by-step introduction to the quantum bit (qubit) and its main properties, the author presents the necessary background in quantum mechanics. The core of the subject, quantum computation, is illustrated by a detailed treatment of three quantum algorithms: Deutsch, Grover and Shor. The final chapters are devoted to the physical implementation of quantum computers, including the most recent aspects, such as superconducting qubits and quantum dots, and to a short account of quantum information. Written at a level suitable for undergraduates in physical sciences, no previous knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed, and only elementary notions of physics are required. The book includes many short exercises, with solutions available to instructors through solutions@cambridge.org.

Review
"A Short Introduction to Quantum Information and Quantum Computation is a laudable textbook by an author who has much experience writing about physics. It outperforms similar texts that contain more pages but fail to communicate the essence of the subject to anyone not working in the field."
Gregg Jaeger, Physics Today

"It is a self-contained presentationa of the main concepts of the field, not only aimed at physicists, but also at mathematicians and computer scientists at the graduate level."
Ellie D'Hondt, Mathematical Reviews

A Masterly Introduction to Quantum Computing
By W. James D. Easton
Beautiful!

This book requires an elementary understanding of quantum mechanics, linear algebra and Hilbert Spaces.

However given that elementary understanding, it leads one gently, clear step by clear step, to understanding what the excitenment is all about.

This is teaching by a master teacher. Very little superfluous. Some treats like the brief and compelling derivation of the Schroedinger Equation from linearity and unitarity.

The exercises are an integral part of the presentation. Do not skip them. If you are understanding the material, each takes one or two minutes and adds to your comprehension and preparedness for what is to come. If you find yourself struggling, you need to pull out one of your old textbooks and review.

If you studied physics ever at a graduate level and want to know why quantum computing and cryptography are so important, this book will give you the key.

It is a gift. Enjoy and learn.

a short introduction to quantum infromation & quantum computation
By D.S.
This is quite nice introduction for undergraduates. It might be a good idea to move some of the problems into the text as they represent fundamental material that can be found in other books. This will allow adoption of this book as a textbook at senior undergraduate level.

Reproductive skew is the study of how reproduction is partitioned in animal societies. In many social animals reproduction is shared unequally and leads to a reproductive skew among group members. Skew theory investigates the genetic and ecological factors causal to the partitioning of reproduction in animal groups and may yield fundamental insights into the evolution of animal sociality. This book brings together new theory and empirical work, mostly in vertebrates, to test assumptions and predictions of skew models. It also gives an updated critical review of skew theory. The team of leading contributors cover a wide range of species, from insects to humans, and discuss both ultimate (evolutionary) and proximate (immediate) factors influencing reproductive skew. Academic researchers and graduate students alike with an interest in evolution and sociality will find this material stimulating and exciting.

Software and Patents in Europe (Cambridge Intellectual Property and Information Law), by Philip Leith

The computer program exclusion from Article 52 of the European Patent Convention (EPC) proved impossible to uphold as industry moved over to digital technology, and the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Organisation (EPO) felt emboldened to circumvent the EPC in Vicom by creating the legal fiction of 'technical effect'. This 'engineer's solution' emphasised that protection should be available for a device, a situation which has led to software and business methods being protected throughout Europe when the form of application, rather than the substance, is acceptable. Since the Article 52 exclusion has effectively vanished, this text examines what makes examination of software invention difficult and what leads to such energetic opposition to protecting inventive activity in the software field. Leith advocates a more programming-centric approach, which recognises that software examination requires different strategies from that of other technical fields.

A thought-provoking insight into the evolution of cosmology for undergraduate students and general readers, this book shows that the mystery of the origin of the universe is far from being solved. Cosmology has advanced over time through observational evidence as well as a lot of speculation. In this historical approach, the authors argue that the speculative element has become a dominant part of modern cosmology. They show how assumptions have been made and portrayed as confirmed facts. This unique book gives not only a critical assessment of the big bang theory, but presents a host of anomalous observations, and puts forward an alternative, controversial theory on the origin of the universe. A non-mathematical account, it contains analogies from everyday life so that readers can understand the concepts easily and follow the arguments presented.

Review
"Too few scientists take pains to what emphasize what we actually know and what's speculation, which is why this book is so refreshing. Mainstream cosmologists maintain that the standard picture is supported by interconnected observations and it is not time for a radical alternative like Narlikar and Burbidge's 'quasi-steady state theory'. But these are certainly interesting times, and they are perfectly expounded in this comprehensive book." Rated 5 out of 5 stars and named book of the month in January 2009 - Marcus Chown, BBC Sky at Night

"Highly Recommended. General readers, all undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals." - B.R. Parker, emeritus, Idaho State University

Defending Steady-State
By Doctor Moss
Jayant Narlikar and Geoffrey Burbidge were both students and colleagues of Fred Hoyle, the most visible proponent of the "steady-state" cosmological model, an alternative to the commonly accepted "big bang" model. This book is intended to call attention to problems, both theoretical and observational, with the big bang model, problems which at the same time suggest something more like the steady-state model.

Not being an astronomer or a physicist, I'm not in a position to say whether they have a real case. They do cite a number of observations and discrepancies that seem better addressed by a revised steady-state model (the "quasi-steady-state cosmology"), as well as explanations within the bounds of their model for what have been taken as strong confirming evidence for the big bang model.

But I do think they come off as a bit . . . whiney. They think that the big bang model has won out by virtue of marketing rather than science. For example, in speaking of one aspect of the current big bang model, "inflation" in the very early universe, they say, ". . . the idea of inflation survived [early discrepancies with observations], largely because it was marketed superbly." They believe that agencies and boards that fund research or decide on how observing time at major observatories (including Hubble) is used are biased in such a way that major research is restricted to validations of the big bang model or ways of conforming it to previous evidence.

The steady-state model has one big problem. It requires continuous creation of matter, i.e., the overall mass of the universe has to be in constant increase (and it's not just conversion of energy to mass -- the whole thing has to be growing).

The authors raise a philosophical objection to the big bang, that there is a single moment, a single event that is like no other in the history of the universe. It happens only once, and scientists don't like things that happen only once -- such "singular" events are very hard to explain, especially when that event is the creation of everything.

The steady-state theory has the advantage of positing continuous rather than one-time creation. Creation happens over and over -- it's study-able, like good scientific events should be. If they are right, of course, that creation is going on now, and it should in principle be detectible. Their theory claims that such creation can only happen in regions of very high matter density, especially the centers of galaxies. They cite observations of active galactic nuclei as potentially confirming evidence. But they have no solid account of how the creation of new matter actually happens in such places.

No doubt, Narlikar and Burbidge are right in implying that science doesn't proceed via the clean, unbiased, disinterested use of "scientific method". Theories gain ground for reasons other than their ability to explain the evidence, and conceptual leaps often go beyond available evidence.

There are a lot of books that make these points (Feyerabend's Against Method, Latour's Science in Action). One that I especially admired was Halton Arp's Seeing Red. Arp's observations of anomalous redshifts are cited by Narlikar and Burbidge as challenging the standard big bang model. Arp details his inability to get the astronomical community's ear, or telescope time, to pursue observations that seemed to call into question the very way we measure large astronomical distances (the redshift-distance relationship). I think Arp's book is especially enlightening about how science is done and how the scientific community resists evidence contrary to prevailing models.

The Puccini Problem: Opera, Nationalism, and Modernity (Cambridge Studies in Opera), by Alexandra Wilson

A detailed investigation of the reception and cultural contexts of Puccini's music, this book offers a fresh view of this historically important but frequently overlooked composer. Wilson's study explores the ways in which Puccini's music and persona were held up as both the antidote to and the embodiment of the decadence widely felt to be afflicting late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italy, a nation which although politically unified remained culturally divided. The book focuses upon two central, related questions that were debated throughout Puccini's career: his status as a national or international composer, and his status as a traditionalist or modernist. In addition, Wilson examines how Puccini's operas became caught up in a wide range of extra-musical controversies concerning such issues as gender and class. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of both the history of opera and of the wider artistic and intellectual life of turn-of-the-century Italy.

The Role of Policymakers in Business Cycle Fluctuations, by Jim Granato, M. C. Sunny Wong

This book's central theme is that a policymaker's role is to enhance the public's ability to coordinate their price information, price expectations, and economic activities. This role is fulfilled when policymakers maintain inflation stability. Inflation persists less when an implicit or explicit inflation target is met. Granato and Wong argue that inflation persistence is reduced when the public substitutes the prespecified inflation target for past inflation. A by-product of this co-ordination process is greater economic stability. In particular, inflation stability contributes to greater economic output stability, including the potential for the simultaneous reduction of both inflation and output variability - inflation-output co-stabilization (IOCS). Granato and Wong use historical, formal, and applied statistical analysis of business-cycle performance in the United States for the 1960 to 2000 period. They find that during periods when policymakers emphasize inflation stability, inflation uncertainty and persistence were reduced.

Review
“Granato and Wong have written an elegant volume that outlines a useful theoretical construct of the issues faced by policymakers in managing business cycles. The implications of their approach go beyond predictions of inflation and output performance. They also extend to recommendations about institutional reform and the role of the political process. Graduate students and academics that teach and think about macroeconomic policy issues will find this book to be a valuable addition to the literature.” - Pierre Siklos, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada

“This splendid work of scholarship will be of considerable interest to both economists and political scientists. The argument relates a specific rule-based monetary policy to inflation and output performance on the one hand, and to the expectations and activities around stable and predictable monetary policies.” - William R. Keech, Carnegie Mellon University

“Innovative in the way it blends historical, mathematical, and statistical analyses and insightful in how it shows that rule-guided policy produced information coordination, Granato and Wong's book is a major contribution to political economy. The Role of Policymakers in Business Cycle Fluctuations will be a valuable resource to scholars who want to understand policy and macroeconomic outcomes in the United States in the Greenspan era and in the years to come.” - John Freeman, University of Minnesota

“Based on rigorous models and compelling econometric evidence, Granato and Wong's argument is that low inflation and stability of output are mutually reinforcing, with accuracy of inflation expectations playing a key role in producing this outcome. The authors weave together impressive theoretical, historical, and statistical support for their thesis.” - Henry Chappell, University of South Carolina

“This book provides an accessible and learned guide to the explosion of recent research on the modern theory of macroeconomic stabilization policy. The authors weave discussions of data, history, politics, and macroeconomic theory together in ways that emphasize the key role of private-sector expectations, and show how policymakers can play an important role in coordinating those expectations to minimize volatility.” -James Bullard, Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis

"Granato and Wong forcefully challenge assumptions about how economic agents form and update their expectations in response to policymaker behavior. Combining insigns and methodologies from economics, statistics, and political science, they show how a policy emphasis on price stability contributes to sustained periods of economic growth. Their models of information, coordination, and learning represent the frontiers of political economy research. This work will serve as a touchstone for a generation of scholars interested in the political determinants of economic performance." - William Bernhard, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
