Dr. Raymond Sinatra is Professor of Anesthesiology at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr Oscar A. de Leon-Casasola is Professor of Anesthesiology and Chief of Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. His research interests include advances in analgesic therapy, physiology and pharmacology of epidural opioids, perioperative surgical outcomes, thoracic and cardiac anesthesia, acute pain control, and chronic cancer pain. He is a member of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, American Society of Anesthesiologists, New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, American Pain Society, and Eastern Pain Association. Dr de Leon-Casasola has authored or co-authored 115 journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters. He serves as an associate editor for the Latin American Journal of Pain, the Argentinian Journal of Anesthesiology, the Journal of the Spanish Society of Pain, and the Clinical Journal of Pain. He also is editor-in-chief of Techniques in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management and was listed as an exceptional practitioner by Good Housekeeping Magazine in 2003. Dr Brian Ginsberg is Professor of Anesthesiology and Medical Director in the Division of Acute Pain Therapy in the Department of Anesthesiology of Duke University School of Medicine. Dr Eugene Viscusi is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and the Director of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management in the Department of Anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University.

Great book for beginners

I found this book over at Powell books in Portland Oregon (Technical store). I've looked at a lot of DSP books trying to gain a basic undestanding of the subject (I'm interested in audio DSP). This is the first book that really clicked with me and got me off the ground. His explanations make sense and aren't clouded with a ton of non-essential theory. He explains the how and why of what you need to know in a straight forward manner helping me break ground where other books lose me on the same subjects. The down side of that is it's not as complete of a book as some of the others. For me it was completely worth it, I can look at other books for more in depth concepts and ideas. He goes over processing images as well as audio so don't get the idea that's it's an audio centric book. The one thing I found difficult was going along nice and easy and all of a sudden "WHAM!" he drops Euler's formula on me. I had to visit a number of other math books before I got that down.

So thumbs up if you are starting out, or even not. I have an experienced mentor at work who has taken interest in a few parts as well. Buy it and review it!

Great DSP book for beginners

This is a great book that has both the basic theory and practical applications. It is great for someone wants to learn the basics and apply to different field. Also, it is easy to read, I read most of this book in coffee shops, no heavy math, just high level overviews.

The first part of the book is on theory, it contains: introduction to signal, sampling, conversion between analogue and digital, Fourier transform, filters, and likelihood method. The style of the book is very friendly, easy to understand, and have lots of figures to illustrate the concept. From these theories, you can easily understand what is sampling bias, the method to deal with irregular sampling, what's the physical meaning of FFT, different type of filters etc.

The best part of this book is the second half which shows you different applications to audio, images, videos, and communications. I found this is really interesting and useful, since you soon grab the essence of the concept you just learned from the first part, and know how they actually used in the real world. I am a student in seismology, so I also spend a lot of time dealing with seismic signals. The applications shown in this book actually inspired me to try some of the method/techniques used in other field to seismology.

I think this book is great for getting the high level overviews of the key techniques in DSP. As other reviewers said, it is not a complete book about DSP. If you want to learn more, after this book, you can choose some of the classics, e.g. Understanding Digital Signal Processing by Richard G. Lyons.

Excellent book!

Dr. Madhow is an exceptional lecturer. I took several classes from him when he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has a very easy to read and intuitive writing style. I highly recommend this book for advanced undergraduates, 1st and 2nd year graduate students and professionals looking for a good review of the fundamentals of digital communications. I have designed many digital communications systems over the course of my career and I can tell you that without the fundamentals I learned from Dr. Madhow, I would have never been able to be an effective communication system designer.

Not a good reference book

This book has a very unique style as far as engineering textbooks go. Instead of highlighting key relationships between certain values/variables/concepts, it tells a story. The equations that are made prominent are highly dependent on the surrounding context, but this is not clear unless you actually read the whole book. While this style can be helpful for some, it is inconsistent with all other engineering books that I've seen, and thus terrible for finding equations for help with the problem.

As for teaching concepts, it often presents simple relationships in mathematical form, which can be hard to understand.

If you read the book through, it will be effective. It is not good reference material.

This book is a great fundamental book for digital communications in electrical engineering. It includes a lot of fundamental problems and examples based on probability and stochastics. It is a great supplement book to have in addition to the Digital Communications book written by Proakis.

The Best Dictionary for language learners in HK and China

As a non-English speaker who has studied English for more than 25 years, it is believed that this dictionary should be the best reference book for any language learners in Hong Kong and China. The dictionary guides people how to pronounce English flawlessly.I highly recommend this dictionary to all university students, diplomats, business executives, secondary school teachers and university professors in Hong Kong and China since most of them fail to pronounce English in an accurate manner. As English language will continue to play a dominant role in the international world, it is instrumental for non-English speakers including Chinese to communicate with English speakers fluently and accurately. Anyway, this dictionary is really value for money!!!

NO PAGE NUMBERS IN KINDLE!!

First off, this is actually an excellent text. However, the Kindle edition is a living nightmare for a student: it has no page numbers. I rented it because I'm moving in the middle of finalizing my dissertation, and somehow my hard copy vanished into a black hole of a box somewhere. I was horrified today to open it up and start citing...only to realize it has no page numbers. Words cannot express how disastrous this is. Why are there no page numbers? Literally no one I know buys a law textbook to read recreationally, so page numbers are actually essential. You might as well sell it missing chapters and pages, Amazon, for all the good this is going to do for me.

Harold L. Vogel is the author of Travel Industry Economics: A Guide for Financial Analysis (Cambridge University Press, 2001), a companion volume to this textbook. He was senior entertainment industry analyst at Merrill Lynch & Co. for 17 years and was ranked as top entertainment industry analyst for a record 10 years by Institutional Investor magazine. A chartered financial analyst, he formerly served on the New York State Governor's Motion Picture and Television Advisory Board and as adjunct professor of media economics at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. Mr Vogel frequently writes and speaks on investment topics related to entertainment and media, leisure, and travel and currently heads an independent investment firm in New York City.

No coverage of the live popular music concert industry

Mr. Vogel has created a readable and informative book. The introductory chapters are a comprehensive overview of economics, leisure time, and media, and may be worth the discounted price of the book on their own.

My complaint is that the section on The Music Industry is not up to date. It is a treatise on the Recorded Music industry only, and neglects the live music concert industry.

His coverage of live popular music entertainment is literally one paragraph. The live concert industry is now one of the main revenue sources for musical artists, in addition to licensing. The concert industry generates over $10 Billion in revenues from live music performance tickets alone. Live Nation and AEG Live dominate. Madonna signed with Live Nation and not a traditional record label because this is now the focal point of the music industry. Contrary to Mr. Vogel's outdated assertion, recorded music is now often a promotional tool used to get fans to buy concert tickets. This has been the case for nearly a decade.

Excellent reference for understanding media business models

This book provides a thorough explanation of the business models of most of the media and entertainment industries - music, radio, TV, even casinos and theme parks. There is both a historical perspective and a presentation of the current state. Most of this information is not available in print or on the net elsewhere.

For example, there's a flowchart that explains royalties in the music industry that explained in one glance what would normally require personal discussions with five or ten people to uncover.

There is also information on valuation models and accounting treatments of the industries studied.

Some reviewers called this book dry - but I think the writing is compact, objective, and informative. Also, there are extensive footnotes and references to other sources.

Academic rigor, an analyst's objectivity and practicality, and an underlying enthusiasm for the subject - excellent.

It is ok but I didn't find anything extraordinary.

I was hoping to get some extraordinary information to say: " WOW! I am glad that I have that book". But I can not say that. I wish there was some real examples or stories of real cases and the reason for their success or failure. I didn't get real analysis.
