Christopher C. Davis is Minta Martin Professor of Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland. He is author of the widely used text Lasers and Electro-Optics (Cambridge University Press, 1996) and co-author of the best-selling text Building Scientific Apparatus (4th edition, Cambridge University Press, 2009).

Not the best lasers text out there:

This book is intended for a graduate-level course on lasers. While covering a number of subjects in depth, there are a large number of mistakes. There has been two reprintings with corrections, so I would hate to have seen the first printing. There are many mistakes in the equations (usually easily ferreted out) as well as in the problems. The problems can be very frustrating as they are often as clear as mud. Overall however, the book does do a good job of covering most topics, but if you are looking for a better lasers book, I would go with Verdeyen's Laser Electronics (ISBN:013706666X) or Siegman's Lasers (ISBN: 0935702113)

Clear, Well-written, Good problems

This book is the kind of book that I have been looking for in the subject of laser. The book is very clear and well-written about the material. This book contains not many problems, but the problems in the book are mostly good problems. This book is appropiate for the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in the electro-optics, photonics areas. The backgrounds necessary for this book are very flexible, since the author explain most of the idea behind the quantum mechanics that he used in the text. But the knowledge of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics would be helpful, not necessary.

Excellent introduction to laser physics & engineering

This book is intended for first-year graduate and senior-level undergraduate students in physics and electrical engineering. It is clearly written with a good balance between depth and breadth, and will serve well either as a text or a reference. The first half covers laser fundamentals while the second half is more application-oriented. The math is at a level appropriate for the intended audience and is mostly fairly straightforward. At over 700 pages this book is a good value for the money.

excellent intro to applied math, not just for chemical engineers

This is extremely well written, combining both intuition and rigour. It has good accompanying matlab demos. It should be of interest to many people who use numerical methods (integration, optimization, eigen analysis, etc), not just chemical engineers.

Alot of extraneous info, but still very good

Its a good book. There is a little too much focus on proof and derivation, but you can still just skim those parts and study the algorithms intently, and you will be just fine.

Very broad in scope; covers multiple linear equations, multiple nonlinear equations, optimization w/ gradient search and stochastic search, and monte-carlo methods.

The section on stochastic differential equations is somewhat lacking though.

So-So Book on Numerical Methods

Explanations are somewhat confusing -- you need a strong math background as the book skips many steps while going through derivations.

Practice problems are somewhat helpful -- however, they lack in-depth solutions and are often significantly harder than the examples that are provided.

About the Author
Michael E. McCormick is currently a Corbin A. McNeill Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the US Naval Academy. He is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1976, he became the co-editor of the journal Ocean Engineering and remained so for thirty years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Marine Technology Society Journal. Professor McCormick was the first recipient of the US Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence and was also awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the US Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. He is the author of Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion. Professor McCormick received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College, Dublin.
