This book provides a great look at what life would be like as a member of one of the most famous armies in history. I highly recommend it to those who want an excellent and impeccably researched book about the daily travels and travails of an ancient Greek soldier.

Unusual academic snapshot

One of the first things I noticed when I first skimming this book, is the attention to detail in evaluating the small but significant factors in everyday operations and life of soldiers.

I was particularly impressed with the close reading of the available ancient sources mining them for weather data, and the impact that had on day to day operations. This type of insight is rare in academic works. Small details such as this can have disastrous effects on military operations, and it is quite impressing to see such attention paid by academics.

A first rate book, although a little pricey, it is worth the money for any student of warfare or ancient history.

A really good read!

"A Greek Army on the March" is a very detailed analysis of day-to-day military life. Nowhere in Lee's meticulous treatment of army logistics did I find myself weighed down or bored, as is all too often the case with similar books. In fact, Lee even finds a way to make army waste management interesting! In sum, the book's remarkable detail will have great appeal specialists and non-specialists alike. An indispensable companion to the study of ancient warfare and well worth the price!

About the Author
Dr Howard Wainer is a Distinguished Research Scientist for the National Board of Medical Examiners and Adjunct Professor of Statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Eric T. Bradlow is the K. P. Chao Professor, Professor of Marketing and Statistics, and Academic Director of the Wharton Small Business Development Center, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the Wharton faculty, he worked in the Corporate Marketing and Business Research Division at the DuPont Corporation, and in the Statistics and Psychometrics Research Group at the Educational Testing Service. Bradlow was recently named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

Dr Xiaohui Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Virginia. She worked as a Principal Data Analyst for three years in the Division of Data Analysis and Research Technology at the Educational Testing Service. She has twice received the National Council on Measurement in Education Award for Scientific Contribution to a Field of Educational Measurement.

Great treatment of testlet response theory, including couching the theory within the field of classical and modern test theory, as well as making a strong case for the advantages one can gain by using testlets. Well-written and advances the reader's conceptual understanding of, and ability to apply, relatively technical topics (e.g., MCMC). Very inclusive of methods for addressing practical application issues (e.g., missing data, obtaining good starting values for estimation).

About the Author
Thomas J. Allen is the Howard W. Johnson Professor of Management, Emeritus and Professor of Organization Studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His long-term research focuses on project management in the pharmaceutical and aerospace industries. Specializing in organizational psychology and management, he explores the relationship between organizational structure and behavior, the role of technological gatekeepers in technology transfer, and how a building's layout influences communication.

Rory O'Shea is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research is primarily focused on the commercialization of academic research, with a particular emphasis on the optimal organizational and financial mechanisms for transferring university-based IP into knowledge-based start-ups. He teaches courses in the areas of new venture finance, technology strategy and entrepreneurship.

Extremely useful, and you don't have to actually be a medical writer

It gets off to a good start, albeit a somewhat wordy one, about the value of clear thinking and clear writing. This is followed by lists of misspelled words, misused words, unnecessary words, imprecise words... Get the idea? Since I don't suffer from any of these symptoms, an overlong list of treatments had the unintended effect of curing my insomnia.

I apologize to the authors, whose effort is to be commended, but I don't recommend reading this cover-to-cover any more than I would recommend reading an encyclopedia or dictionary that way. Dip in as needed to save yourself hours of Googling, perhaps. I will, however, use what they had to say about Watson and Crick, who wrote about their Nobel-winning research on the nature of DNA with stunning simplicity and clarity.

Pericles Lewis is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Yale University. His past publications explore the development of modern literary forms in a period of political and social instability and include Modernism, Nationalism and the Novel (Cambridge, 2000) and The Cambridge Introduction to Modernism (Cambridge, 2007).

Religion for the Irreligious

Written by a Yale Professor of English who boldly states his affinity with Max Weber in being totally "unmusical" religiously, Pericles (nice name!) Lewis nonetheless probes profoundly into the human need for religion of some kind, religion here meaning whatever floats your boat. So this is as far from chic atheism as secularism can go. Lewis is not only sympathetic on a very broad scale, he always sees the other side, as though he's teaching a compare-and-contrast essay. To me, someone who has read very widely in theology and related arcana, this is simply the best book I have read on religion because it helps me place my self in this 'modernist' world: as Rimbaud said, "One must always be totally modern." Yes of course but the heart does have its reasons, and I need to end saying that I am totally musical, religiously and otherwise.
