About the Author
John L. Brooke is Humanities Distinguished Professor of History at Ohio State University, where he also directs the Center for Historical Research. His books include Columbia Rising: Civil Life on the Upper Hudson from the Revolution to the Age of Jackson (2010), which won the Best Book Prize from the Society of the Historians of the Early American Republic; The Heart of the Commonwealth: Society and Political Culture in Worcester County Massachusetts, 1713-1861 (Cambridge, 1994), which won the Merle Curti Award for Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians; and The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844 (Cambridge, 1989), which won the Bancroft Prize for American History. He has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Antiquarian Society and the Harvard Charles Warren Center.

A Rather Amazing Synthesis of Knowledge!

Excellent synthesis of current knowledge of MANY aspects of science that are all too often viewed separately. John L. Brooke has written a work that draws together modern understanding of genetics/epigenetics, plate tectonics, climate change, punctuated evolutionary thought and far more in a manner that makes sense. While not "dumbed down" it is not written above the level of educated readers with general knowledge in search of more and how things interconnect. It is in the synthesis of concepts and their interconnecting aspects and feedback loops that Brooke shines. While not 'light' reading Brooke did not "write an Ambien".
What might have ended up being the rantings of somebody of lesser talent come across as a synthesis of scientific current understanding.

Excellent history

This volume is "big history" and "global history" at its best. Fully versed in both biological and hard sciences, historian John Brooke presents a masterful overview of the history of humankind from its beginning several million years ago to the present day. Throughout, Brooke illustrates the importance of climate changes in bringing about (indeed forcing) basic alterations in how people worldwide have lived. In very readable prose Brooke discusses how specific climate alterations deeply influenced the development of different types of human cultures over time. Part 1 of this volume analyzes the evolution of earth sytems from the formation of Earth about 4.6 billion years ago, and what those systems meant for living plants and creatures, through the development and global spread modern humankind. Part 2 examines the domestication of plants and animals, the development of agriculture, and the rise of state governments. Part 3 looks at ancient and medieval societies, and Part 4 examines human societies since about 1400 AD. Brooke stresses that climate changes and variabilities shaped human cultures until very recently. Only since the onset of industrialization has the relationship, Brooke shows, been reversed, with human actions shaping climate. Brooke's volume is essential for anyone interested in the course of history and current events--an enjoyable and valuable read.

About the Author
Nicholas Arndt was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in Canada in 1975. Following academic positions in the United States, Canada and Germany and at the Université de Rennes, France, he moved in 1999 to the Université de Grenoble where he is Professor of Petrology-Geochemistry. Professor Arndt's research interests include petrology and geochemistry of mafic and ultramafic rocks, magmatic ore deposits, and the early-Earth environment. He is Director of the European Science Foundation 'Archean Environment: the Habitat of Early Life' program and a founding editor of eEarth, an online journal of the European Geosciences Union.

Michael Lesher is Professor of Economic Geology and Research Chair in the Mineral Exploration Research Centre and Department of Earth Sciencesat Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. He works on the petrogenesis and physical volcanology of komatiites and associated magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE deposits.

Steve Barnes is a research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Perth, Australia. He also works on the petrogenesis and physical volcanology of komatiites and associated magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE deposits.

About the Author
Andreas W. Daum is a Professor of Modern History at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has taught at the University of Munich, where he earned his doctorate, and has been a Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, and a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at Harvard University. He is the author of Wissenschaftspopularisierung im 19. Jahrhundert and the coeditor of America, the Vietnam War, and the World, with Lloyd C. Gardner and Wilfried Mausbach, and, with Christof Mauch, of Berlin - Washington: Capital Cities, Cultural Representations, and National Identities, both published by Cambridge University Press.

The only information-packed book on bipolar II out there

As a counselor and someone diagnosed with bipolar II, I was looking for more information specifically related to bipolar II, particularly one with updated medical information. This book was full of research and information from several authors who have spent their careers studying bipolar. The fact that this book focused exclusively on bipolar II was a realy draw for me. This book is written more for the professional, but can also be helpful for people who have bipolar II and are looking for more research and information. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Leslie Paul Thiele is Professor of Political Science at the University of Florida. A recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Science and Research Council of Canada, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, he is the author of Friedrich Nietzsche and the Politics of the Soul, Timely Meditations: Martin Heidegger and Postmodern Politics, and Thinking Politics, 2nd Edition. He was selected as a University of Florida Reserach Foundation Professor (1997-2000) and was nominated for the Teacher/Scholar of the Year Award in 1997.

Well written but oversimplifying

This book provides some important insights into practical wisdom, such as concerning intuition, experience and narrative. But it shares the oversimplifications and, indeed, narrow basis, common to much of the writings in psychology of decision making and also parts of neurosciences.
Let me limit myself to four of their most insidious ones:
1. The book presumes to deal with "judgment" as a whole, implicitly assuming that it has an "essence" independent of contexts. This is true, but only partly so. Thus, it is misleading to bungle together legal and political judgments, ignoring the different role of formal norms in their morphology. Quite some studies indicate that there are profound differences between Western decision cultures which are more analytical and Asian ones which are more holistic. And so on - context matters a lot, requiring a differentiated approach to judgment which at least explores the boundaries between shared and disparate features.
2. The term "political judgment" is widely used, without clarifying its meaning. Does the author have in mind citizen deciding how to vote, or a President deciding when to authorize a missile strike, or what? This is more than neglect of context, constituting fuzzy use of concept which are critical for the text.
3. The book correctly emphasizes the importance of processed experience or its surrogates as bases for good intuition. But important ways to learn from history, such as "re-enactment" as proposed by Collingwood, are ignored. More fundamental an error in omission is lack of discussion of the impotence, and indeed dangers of experience and the intuition based on it in the face of radically novel issues -- as is increasingly the case in an epoch of rapid change.
4. Most problematic of all is the rather narrow conception of "rationality" which is at the center of the book, as mainly including logic, probabilistic reasoning and statistics. Clearly, if this is "rationality" then we have no choice but to rely a lot on intuition. But, similarly to the importance of "abduction" (not mentioned in the book) as proposed by Peirce as an alternative to induction and deduction, there are many patterned forms of deliberation which are not "rational" in the narrow sense, but explicit and structured. This does not imply that intuition is not important and sometimes critical, but the "third way' (in part also creeping into modern logic, such as in modal and temporal logic) can be of much help to upgrade explicit judgment processes outside the dichotomy of "rationality" (in the narrow sense" and intuition. This is ignored in the book, as are related facets of judgment, such as value choice and creativity, which are not accessible by "rationality," but can be improved by patterned processes, such as discussed in "value reasoning."
