About the Author
Michael R. King is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University. He is an expert on the receptor-mediated adhesion of circulating cells, and has developed new computational and in vitro models to study the function of leukocytes, platelets, stem and cancer cells under flow. He has co-authored two books and received numerous awards, including the 2008 ICNMM Outstanding Researcher Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and received the 2009 Outstanding Contribution for a Publication in the international journal Clinical Chemistry.

Nipa A. Mody is currently a postdoctoral research associate at Cornell University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She received her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 2008 and has received a number of awards including a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the NIH in 2005 and the Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Rochester in 2004.

Superb, Straightforward, & Satisfying

With Numerical and Statistical Methods for Bioengineering, King and Mody have provided a textbook that satisfies the needs of many people within the fields of biomedical sciences/bio(medical)-engineering. For those new to biomedical research, this book will certainly serve you as an invaluable resource throughout your career. The textbook touches on the most important concepts/methods used for data analysis. Examples of important concepts discussed in the text include finding the errors associated with model parameters and finding the covariance matrix for model parameters, among many others. For those of you more experienced in the field, this book will certainly serve you as a reference text when the need arises to review methods for finding roots for nonlinear equations, for performing numerical quadrature for ordinary differential equations, for performing numerical model regression and optimization, or when the need arises to utilize useful algorithms for bioinformatic analysis (i.e. BLAST, ClustalW, T-Coffee, etc.).

The textbook explains all methods from first principles. The book flows in a logical progression and this makes it very easy on the reader. Dozens of real-life scenarios are used to provide examples of how to apply the methods in everyday life (i.e. transport phenomena, pharmocokinetics, research studies, etc.).This textbook also provides written out MATLAB code for all methods discussed. Having used this book for my own projects and research, I fully recommend this book.

Excellent because uses examples from the scientific literature

This book is very didactic. It has clear explanations and interesting problems. Other reviewers have said it before.
What sets this book apart, though, is that the authors give a purpose to the concepts they teach. Here, math is a tool to analyze scientific data and publish your work. The book is full of examples from the biomedical literature, from a broad variety of research areas. Even the problems, at the end of each chapter, refer to published work (as far as I can tell.) And even though textbook authors who do reference the literature often tend to have a bias for their own research interests and end up citing themselves almost exclusively, it is not the case in this book! The authors use examples that range from microbial population dynamics, enzyme kinetics, and genetics to MRI data analysis... There are too many to list. If you're interested in the biomedical field at all, you will find an example or a problem in this book that speaks to you.
It's the basis of pedagogy: if you want your students to remember the material, you need to make sure they understand why they're studying it. And this book achieves this goal by showing us the real-life applications the concepts taught have. I think every professor who teaches math for bioengineers or biomedical students should assign this textbook to their class. But I also believe this is a good reference book. Now that I own it and worked with it last semester in one of my courses, I actually find myself referring back to it this semester when working on assigned problems.

About the Author
John Bridge was awarded a Ph.D. from St Andrews University, Scotland, in 1973. He now holds the position of Professor of Geological Sciences at the State University of New York at Binghamton where his research interests focus on fluvial sedimentology, turbulent water flow and sediment transport. Professor Bridge has served on the editorial boards of several sedimentology journals and he is also the author/editor of two other books.

Robert Demicco was awarded a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1973. He is now Professor of Geology at State University of New York at Binghamton where his research interests focus on carbonate sedimentology and applications of fuzzy logic to geology. Professor Demicco is the author/editor of two books on these topics.

About the Author
Henry Kressel is Managing Director of Warburg Pincus, LLC. He began his career at RCA laboratories where he pioneered the first practical semiconductor lasers. He was the founding president of the IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) and co-founded the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology. He is the recipient of many awards and honors, a fellow of the American Physical Society and the holder of 31 issued US patents for electronic and optoelectronic devices.

The Digital Revolution

Dr Kressel has captured the disruptions in society caused by fundamental shifts in the technology base dating from 1948 with the invention of the transistor and culminating in the recent emergence of IP networks as the dominant technological force behind our data and communications network. The early chapters deal with the history and impact of these important technologies and for those readers with a need to understand these technologies in greater detail, appendices are provided that take those interested into a journey of discovery into the important fundamental technology discontinuities such as Integrated Circuits, their scalability and limits, logic gates, semiconductor memories, semiconductor lasers and LEDs, photodetectors, fiber optics, and LCD displays which are used throughout the networks of today. These early parts of the book also point out the importance of the protocols that are used to transport data as well as the underpinning software methods that are used to build the networks without which engineers would not have been able to build today's Internet. Again, appendices are provided on these topics for the enquiring reader.

The book takes the reader through the early technology shifts that have enabled the knowledge economy and the author has mapped these changes to very basic but nonetheless revolutionary shifts in software, semiconductors, wireless and fiber optics. These dislocations taken together with the emergence of the venture capital industry and the entrepreneurial spirit fostered in the technology centers in Silicon valley and elsewhere, provided the mix for the revolutionary data networks to emerge which would have far reaching societal changes in later years. The book describes this journey and along the way the author draws our attention to the demise of the industrial central laboratories that nurtured the early inventions that gave birth to these technology dislocations and whose gradual disappearance in the 1960s and 1970s released large numbers of very bright scientists and engineers into both government laboratories and most importantly, small business start-ups. These in turn provided the incubators that gave birth to such technology behemoths as DEC, Intel and others.

Dr Kressel then shows us that the improvements in the secondary education system in the United States fuelled these new companies and together with significant venture capital, nurtured a large number of new companies. These companies had the heft to eventually produce the high performance optical systems, computers and servers necessary to populate early distributed data networks. These were born out of US government-sponsored activities to devise resilient data networks that could survive potential threats emerging from the Cold War of the 1970s and 1980s. These networks eventually were to become the Internet, a pervasive network that now has affected us all and which provides us with the infrastructure today to instantly communicate on a global scale and to provide an easily searchable database that enriches both our work and home lives. The author shows how the technology has disrupted many industries and has resulted in the loss of many companies who have not been able to respond to change in a timely fashion. He demonstrates that the Internet has given birth to countless companies that capitalize on the network to provide new services and industries but also points out that it also threatens today's telecommunication companies since the high available bandwidth agnostic to the flow of voice, data and video provides new opportunities for a new breed of service providers to bypass the legacy voice networks.

These technology shifts also bring about the emergence of knowledge and capability in other parts of the world and provide the infrastructure to transfer the manufacture of these key products and in some cases, their design. This in turn could threaten the developed economies by hollowing-out the industrial sector of these developed nations and stimulating the economies of the developing nations, which now can service their own needs. Dr Kressel concludes by pointing out that developed economies must develop internal policies that protect their important leading products and their manufacture while still providing a competitive framework that fosters new products to renew the cycle.

Data Driven Analysis of Disruptive Technologies and Financial Innovation

In the interest of full disclosure, I have had the opportunity to work with Dr Henry Kressel on a variety of Warburg Pincus engagements since 1990. I attended MIT from 1964-1972, and learned first hand how many companies were started by MIT alums, such as Bose (by Amar Bose), Analog Devices (by Ray Stata), and DEC (by Ken Olsen), as well as seeing my classmate Bob Metcalfe create the most widely used network technology today, Ethernet (akin to the electrical power outlet), and then 3Com. While at Bell Laboratories, I saw the advent of UNIX, the rise of DARPANet leading to the network of networks or Internet, the advent of local area networks (I represented ATT on Project 802 Local Area Network Standards) which permitted networks of computers to share printers, storage, and network access as if they were a single computer. I was involved with the original funding of Ciena, the first commercially successful optical transmission equipment vendor, with moving Uniphase into telecomms to create JDSUniphase as a vendor of optical components and modules, and Covad, one of the first data only Competitive Local Exchange Carriers. With that as backdrop, I found the book to be full of insights, driven by excellent data analysis: good analysis leads to surprising insights, and I found many of them throughout.

The discussion of financial innovation and the mechanisms to commercialize the technical innovations is in my view without equal and is worth the entire book (and the other sections are outstanding!): the issues are precisely delimited, the creation of lega structures to facilitate commercialization, to align the interests of customers, investors, and companies, indeed the term venture capital was created because no bank would lend money to a business with no customers or revenues yet there was a clear need for such funding and the financial payoffs could be huge. This chapter merits particularly detailed rereading to understand the terse lessons dispensed here.

The sections on manufacturing restructuring, globalization, governmental oversight, and industry structure take us back to one fundamental truth: there are two major businesses, transportation and communication, and the communication business is still undergoing an incredible revolution today and for the next twenty odd years (at which point biotech and materials science advances will be in full flower).

A powerful, epiphany-inducing book

Very few people have a full view of computing, their thinking is
usually restricted to the layer or two in which they operate,
with an occasional glimpse a level above or below.

While teaching an embedded systems course I started with a two
transistor nand gate, building up to a simple control unit with
a simple assembly language, then a bit of compiler theory to
come down to the assembly from their programming language.
There was a real epiphany moment for students when they saw
the full view of computing.

I believe Dr. Kressel's book has that power in a broader sense
for the technology industry as a whole, as well as for the student
of Computer Science.

About the Author
Eric O. Hanson is Patrick A. Donohoe S.J. Professor of Political Science at Santa Clara University. He studied in East Asia for five years, including graduate work at National Taiwan University, before receiving his doctorate from Stanford University. He has been a fellow at the Stanford University Center for International Security and Arms Control. He is the author of Catholic Politics in China and Korea (1980) and The Catholic Church in World Politics (1990).

About the Author
Jean-Pierre Cuif is a Professor in the Department of Geology at the Université de Paris-Sud II, Orsay, France. Since 1980 his research team has developed a specialized approach to the mineralized units that built the calcareous skeletons of invertebrates through Earth history. In addition to basic research on distribution and composition of the organic compounds associated with the mineral phase, this approach has led to participation of the team in multiple programs dealing with biomineralization in economically important molluscs.

Yannicke Dauphin is an Assistant Professor at the Université de Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie), Paris, France. She worked in Jean-Pierre Cuif's biomineralization research team at the Université de Paris-Sud II. After focussing on cephalopod shells, she has extended her research on the structure and composition of modern and fossil molluscs, corals and vertebrate skeletons.

Jim Sorauf taught sedimentology and paleontology at the State University of New York at Binghamton from 1962 until becoming emeritus in 2001. He has published approximately 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals on skeletal structures of modern corals and on systematics and paleobiology of fossil corals ranging in age from Cambrian to Pleistocene. He is a former co-editor of Fossil Cnidaria and Porifera. He was a Trustee of the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca, New York for many years, serving as President of their Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1990.

About the Author
David Copp is professor of philosophy at the University of Florida. He is the author of Morality, Normativity and Society and has edited and co-edited several volumes including The Oxford Handbook of Ethical Theory. He served for many years as an editor of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy and is currently an Associate Editor of Ethics and the subject editor for metaethics of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Roger Chickering is Professor of History, BMW Center for German and European Studies, at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. His numerous works on modern German and European history include, as editor with Stig Forster, The Shadows of Total War: Europe, East Asia, and the United States, 1919-1939 (2003), and Imperial Germany and the Great War (1998, 2004).

A tale of shortage, attrition and exhaustion

I felt like reading on WWI, but not exactly a military or political narrative. I found this book, and its subject seemed interesting to me, so I decided it to give it a chance, in despite of not finding previous comments on it.

Sometimes, in order to understand a complex phenomena, it may be useful to focus in a representative case ("ab uno disce omnes", i.e., "from one example judge of the rest", as the Virgilian verse says), although the author, cautiously, warns us that he does not imply that Freiburg experience (with a population of about 85,000 souls in 1914) is valid to understand the way the German homefront live in WWI.

The theme of his book is the pervasive impact of war in the live of the city's residents. However, it is not the usual book written in a "ordinary life in the times of..." style.

Perhaps, in order to understand the book, it should be reminded that the Entente implemented a quite effective blockage of continental powers, in order for them not to be able to obtain any item necessary or convenient for war. With that background in mind, the final outcome was that war shortages importuned daily life in most basic ways. They crippled Freiburg local economy, created a bureaucratic nightmare, overtaxed the capacity of public authority to provide effective relief to producers or consumers and eroded urban civility.

On order to provide us with a complete, even a total, picture of war in Freiburg, we are informed of facts such as the following:

- Ecological imbalance. Making land available to grow food raised serious concerns. There was a systematic uprooting of trees, bushes and edges that had grown in the fields before the war. The entire animal population in the region withdrew in the face of increasing cultivation. More aggressive birds (e.g., blackbird, ravens and sparrows) plundered the vegetable crops, while reduced populations of the other birds (and cats) encouraged regular infestations of the city by insects and rodents.

- Treatment of war neurosis. The diagnosis of this condition emphasized the mental predisposition, the pre-traumatic weakness of the hysterical patient. As a cure, it was prescribed "active treatment", a regime of draconian, martial discipline (with male supervisors), often in combination with electric-shock therapy -as if the object were to make patients more afraid of their doctors than the trenches.

- The feminization of the city was the war's social signature. Women were everywhere in the war economy. They also represented the principal recipients of charity, the most desperate cases of war-born poverty, the most often objects of bureaucratic humiliation, and the bulk of the city's frustrated consumers.

- A story of war, love and tragedy. A German domestic servant helped a French prisoner to escape in the disguise of a woman. After the lovers were apprehended in a guesthouse in their way towards the Swiss frontier, the prisoner was returned to camp and the woman dispatched to the penitentiary in Freiburg, where she hanged herself in despair.

- Religion and war: Hugo Schwartz, the pastor at the Christ's Church said to his parishioners: "Should there be a man among us who is not resolve to shed his last drop of blood for the Fatherland, to him I say in the name of God: you are no man, you are no German, you re no Christian. Get out of this church".

- By the end of the war, the official pronouncements about it were no more credible than official pronouncements about the price of potatoes.

All that (and much more that I do not mention in this summary) is exhaustively developed in 568 pages (plus a statistical appendix plus bibliography). The book is no very engaging, but it is not dry either. It can be savoured by the professional historian and by the educated layperson too. Therefore, my rating is between 5 (content) and 3 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 2, sometimes raising to 4).

Other books that I would recommend reading more or less as a complement to understand Germany (and German WWI), would be: i) "History of Germany, 1780-1918: The Long Nineteenth Century" by David Blackbourn; ii) "Die sieben Todsünden des Deutschen Reiches im Ersten Weltkrieg" by Sebastian Haffner (I have found no English translation, I have read a Spanish one: "Los siete pecados capitales del Imperio Alemán en la Primera Guerra Mundial"); and iii) setting a more general framework, "The German Way of War: From the Thirty Years' War to the Third Reich" by Robert M. Citino.
