About the Author
François Henri Cornet is a Professor at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Strasbourg. Prior to this he worked in the Department of Seismology at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, and was also Visiting Scientist at Stanford University and at The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His main research interests are in rock mechanics - specialising in measurement and modelling of stress fields; in rock-fluid interactions, including induced seismicity and application to geothermal energy development; and in the development of large scale, in situ, geophysical laboratories. Professor Cornet has extensive experience of teaching geomechanics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, and has also consulted internationally on stress field evaluations.

Michael Dine is Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is an A. P. Sloan Foundation Fellow and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Prior to this Professor Dine was a Research Associate at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, a long-term member of the Institute for Advanced Study, and Henry Semat Professor at the City College of the City University of New York.

The missing link.

I have been trying to learn some string phenomenology, but this was not easy because I did not know any phenomenology. Thats how I ended up looking at Dine's book, which seems to be the only book around that comes close to being an "Introduction to Phenomenology".

I was suspicious at first because the book is not that fat and the back-cover claimed to cover pretty much everything that one calls high-energy theory. But there is a method that Dine adopts to do this, which is to focus on techniques and derivations only when they are useful for the general line of ideas that he pursues. When they are tangential he just quotes the results (the pradigmatic example is the presentation of N=1, D=4 supergravity). This does NOT mean that the book is a compendium of formulas, far from that. What he focuses on is precisely what is needed to get you up to speed with the current state of the art in "phenomenology" and the physical motivations are clear throughout. I had always thought of phenomenology as a jungle of arbitrary and detailed quick-fixes which was one reason why I always avoided it. After reading the book... ummm... I still think that impression has truth in it, but now I also know that there is a lot of method behind the madness and some of it is in fact quite beautiful.

Prerequisites: you need to know QFT, but things like anomalies, instantons, monopoles etc. are covered in the book.

Flux compactifications are not discussed, but I guess that is a lot of extra material and deserves a separate review. To anyone interested in
that, I recommend Denef's Les Houches lctures which are up on the arXiv.

About the Author
David Glover is a Senior Research Specialist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He is the author or co-author of 67 published articles, book chapters and abstracts. Dr Glover's research uses satellite data, model results and shipboard data to elucidate the mechanisms and processes by which the oceans play a major role in the maintenance of the global climate.

William J. Jenkins is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has published 84 peer-reviewed journal and book articles. Dr Jenkins is the Director of the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility (NOSAMS). In 1983 he received the Rosenstiel Award in Oceanographic Science from the University of Miami and in 1997 he received the Henry Bryant Bigelow Award in Oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr Jenkins' interests include studying tracers as applied to oceanic physical, chemical, biological and geological processes; air-sea and ice-water exchange of gases; ocean biological productivity and its controls; radiogenic and primordial noble gas isotopes in the sea, atmosphere, lakes, ground waters, sediments and rocks; climatic changes in the ocean and its effects on biogeochemical systems; and radiocarbon and the global carbon cycle in the last 60,000 years.

Scott C. Doney is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal and book articles. He was awarded the James B. Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union in 2000 and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Program Fellowship in 2004. He has travelled extensively, lending his expertise to a number of national and international science programs, most recently as inaugural chair of the Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) program. He has also testified before both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. His research interests include marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics, ocean acidification, the global carbon cycle, climate change, and the intersection of science and policy.

Excellent, comprehensive

This book covers everything from how to compute a mean, to spatial statistics, to finite difference and numerical integration. It thus provides a thorough introduction to many of the key analytical skills needed by a quantitative marine scientist---or really any Earth System scientist. Significantly, the approach in the book is very much example driven, and accompanied by sample MATLAB scripts; this contributes to the development of students' individual analytical libraries, leaving them with both understanding and capacity. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Alik Ismail-Zadeh is a Senior Scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Chief Scientist of the Russian Academy of Sciences at Moscow (RusAS), and Professor of the Institut de Physique de Globe de Paris. He graduated from the Baku State and Lomonossov Moscow State Universities before being awarded Ph.D. and Doctor of Science degrees in geophysics from RusAS. He lectures on computational geodynamics at the University of Karlsruhe, Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, and Moscow State University of Oil and Gas, while his research interests cover crust and mantle dynamics, basin evolution, salt tectonics, and seismic hazards. Professor Ismail-Zadeh is the recipient of the 1995 Academia Europaea Medal and the 2009 American Geophysical Union International Award, and is Secretary-General of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics until 2015.

Paul Tackley is Chair of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Group in the Institute of Geophysics, Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich). He received an MA from the University of Cambridge and an MS and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology before taking up a position in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He became a full professor there before moving to ETH Zürich in 2005, where he currently teaches courses in geodynamic modeling. Professor Tackley's research involves applying large-scale three-dimensional numerical simulations using state of the art methods and parallel supercomputers to study the structure, dynamics and evolution of the Earth and other terrestrial planets. He has served as an associate editor for various journals and is on the editorial board of Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics.
