Afroasiatic languages are spoken by some 300 million people in Northern, Central and Eastern Africa and the Middle East. This book is the first typological study of these languages, which are comprised of around 375 living and extinct varieties. They are an important object of study because of their typological diversity in the areas of phonology (some have tone; others do not), morphology (some have extensive inflectional systems; others do not), position of the verb in the clause (some are verb-initial, some are verb-medial, and some are verb-final) and in the semantic functions they encode. This book documents this typological diversity and the typological similarities across the languages and includes information on endangered and little-known languages. Requiring no previous knowledge of the specific language families, it will be welcomed by linguists interested in linguistic theory, typology, historical linguistics and endangered languages, as well as scholars of Africa and the Middle East.

About the Author
Yonatan Eyal received his A.B. in history from Stanford University and his A.M. and Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. Eyal has been the recipient of the Dissertation Writing Fellowship at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History Fellowship, the Richard A. Berenson Graduate Fellowship at Harvard University, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies, and the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education. His articles have been published in Civil War History, American Nineteenth Century History, and the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society. This is Eyal's first book.

About the Author
Ashok D. Belegundu has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, since 1986. Prior to this, he taught at GMI, now Kettering University, in Michigan. He received his B. Tech. degree from I.I.T. Madras and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has been a principal investigator on research projects involving optimization for several agencies including the National Science Foundation, Army Research Office, NASA, SERC (UK), MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation, Gentex Corporation, and Ingersoll-Rand. He has organized two international conferences on optimization in industry and has authored or edited four books and written a chapter in a book. He has given short courses on finite elements and optimization to the Forging Industry Association, Hazleton Pumps, Infosys (India). Tirupathi R. Chandrupatla has been a Professor and Founding Chair of Mechanical Engineering at Rowan University since 1995. He started his career as a design engineer with Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), Bangalore. He then taught at I.I.T. Bombay. Professor Chandrupatla also taught at the University of Kentucky, Lexington and GMI Engineering and Management Institute (now Kettering University), before joining Rowan. Chandrupatla received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award at Rowan University in 2005. He is also the author of Quality and Reliability in Engineering and two books on finite element analysis. Professor Chandrupatla has broad research interests, which include design, optimization, manufacturing engineering, finite element analysis, and quality and reliability. He published widely in these areas and serves as an industry consultant. Professor Chandrupatla is a registered Professional Engineer and also a Certified Manufacturing Engineer. A real gem for numerical optimization students

This was the first book I read when I started learning about numerical optimization, a few years ago. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased a second copy that I took with me on trips. The book covers various aspects of numerical optimization and includes QBasic source code listings in the book. The companion CD has additional QBasic source code and FORTRAN listings. The style is clear and easy to follow and is supported by numerous examples and graphs. In addition, the source code enforces the concepts presented by the authors. I congratulate the authors on doing a fine job in presenting the material. I sure hope that the authors come up with an updated version to give examples in Visual Basic .Net.

I highly recommend this book for numerical optimization students and professional.

About the Author
David A. J. Richards is Edwin D. Webb Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. He received his AB from Harvard College in 1966, his D. Phil. in moral philosophy from Oxford University in 1971, and his JD from Harvard Law School in 1971. His Oxford Doctoral dissertation was published by Oxford University Press in 1971 as A Theory of Reasons for Action, and he has published an additional 12 books, including Sex, Drugs, Death, and the Law: An Essay on Human Rights and Overcriminalization (Rowan and Littlefield, 1982) which was named the best book in criminal justice ethics by the John Jay College of Criminal Ethics in 1982. Choice Magazine named his book Foundations of American Constitutionalism (Oxford) one of the best academic books of the year in 1989. He has served as vice-president of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy and was the Shikes lecturer in civil liberties at the Harvard Law School in 1998.

About the Author
John M. Carpenter was Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Michigan from 1964-75. He later became a senior physicist at Argonne National Laboratory where he originated and built the first accelerator-based pulsed neutron sources. He is now a Distinguished Scientist Emeritus at Argonne National Laboratory and was awarded the Clifford Shull Prize in Neutron Physics in 2006.

Chun-Keung Loong was a senior physicist at Argonne-IPNS for twenty-five years. He engaged in the development of neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy and conducted numerous collaborative studies of advanced materials at pulsed and steady-state neutron sources worldwide. He is a seasoned lecturer and organizer of international workshops at many universities and government laboratories in the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
